Margaret Coats, age 96 of Sac City, IA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 3, 2025. Margaret Elizabeth Kolbe was born on April 25, 1929, to parents Earl and Opal (Schrader) Kolbe in Sac City. She was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Sac City and confirmed in April of 1943 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City where she was a lifetime member. Margaret grew up on a farm outside of Sac City and attended country school. Her dad built a small scooter that she rode to school every day. She graduated from Sac City High School in 1947.
Margaret married Russell Coats on October 18, 1947. This union was blessed with two sons, Robert and Donald. They lived in Sac City and in 1960, built a new home. Margaret was a homemaker who enjoyed her well-kept home, cooking, planting flowers every spring and caring for them throughout the summer (especially her rose bushes), and working on genealogy.
She and Russ both loved big band music and made sure to attend any live bands playing in the area. The two of them enjoyed ballroom dancing at Lakewood Ballroom, the Cobblestone, and many other dance halls over the years. They also spent a lot of time fishing together. Margaret loved playing cards and for many years, she and Russ were in a card club together. Once their boys were grown and out of the house, the couple enjoyed traveling and visited Florida, Arizona, and Washington D.C., as well as several other places over the years.
More than anything, Margaret enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a very proud grandma for sure! She will be missed dearly by her family and all who knew and loved her.

“I remember Margaret at church (St. Paul's Lutheran) when I was a kid. I recognized her face in the obits immediately. So sorry for your loss. She was a nice little lady. Was her father in law Mr. Coats who came around weekly with bags of feed for the animals? If we needed more than one bag he would make sure they all matched for making a new dress or skirt. Margaret's picture was a trip back in history for me. Lois was in my grade.”

“Jen- she was always your safe place to land. She helped you thru some tough times and I'm certain shared a little faith and guidance to work thru your hurts. A classy lady ALL the time. Hairdo an absolute must. Classy clothes. Lipstick. I cherish the times we spent at her home when we were young, had snacks or just visited - even after Larissa was born. She was someone I ALWAYS got a hug from in church both when I attended and would come back once in awhile to attend as a much older adult. Her & your gpa were like glue. I worried about her when he died. But she forged ahead in grace. Again, such a CLASSY lady with a big heart and always a fancy car! 🩷 I'm so sorry for your loss! She was a gem!! ”

“Jen- "Jenny" maybe to her at times when we were all young. We send our heartfelt sympathy to you, Rick, the kids and grands. Also to her other family members. We know what a special bond you always had with her from the time you were young until she passed. Someone who loved you unconditionally and took time to listen to what was coming from your heart. She taught you so much. May your memories give you peace and comfort as you mourn her loss. She was blessed to live a long and good life. Now her and your gpa are dancing in Heaven. We all love you and are here for you. Jennifer J., Melissa, Dawn, Kay, Karen, Penny & Jonna. ”
