Laverne E. Huehl, age 96, of Sac City, IA, passed away at Black Hawk Life Care Center on April 23, 2014. Laverne was born on January 21, 1918 on the family farm west of Sac City to Leslie Glen and Elnora M. (Block) Huehl. He lived most of his life near Sac City and graduated from Sac City High School in 1931.
Laverne met the love of his life, Esther Wirtjes at the Candy Kitchen in Sac City and they were married on June 9, 1941 at the Huehl home place west of Sac City. Laverne purchased another farm south of the home place and this is where they started to raise their family. A son, Gerald was born in 1943 and a daughter Janis was born in 1945. They lived on the farm until Lavern’s combine accident when they moved to Sac City for a short time. Losing part of his foot did not stop Laverne from working or dancing. He built a new house for his family in 1947 and continued to do carpenter work while farming. He then went back to college and got his degree in accounting and tax accounting. He worked in accounting until he was in his mid 70’s.
Laverne was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sac City and a member of Sac City Lions Club. As a member of the Lions he loved helping with the omelet breakfast and riding on the Lions Float in the 4th of July parades. He also enjoyed taking tickets for many years at school functions.
His parents preceded him in death; son Gerald; wife Esther; and great-granddaughter Chrystal Olerich.
