Maurice Luke, age 86, of Sac City, IA, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Maurice was born June 18, 1931, in Sac City, to Vernon and Beulah (Anderson) Luke. He attended Coon Valley Township Country School and graduated from Sac City High School in 1948. He attended Iowa State for a short time, before returning home to help his father with the farming. He also worked at the cannery.
On April 11, 1959, Maurice was united in marriage to Phyllis May Roth at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Carroll, IA. They made their home on the family farm near Sac City and together raised three children: Christine, Steven, and Brad.
“And on the eighth day, God created a farmer.” This saying describes Maurice. He loved farming and never really ever retired. From the time he started farming with his father through the years, farming was his passion. He did take time out to do a little fishing and hunting in his younger years, and he also enjoyed bowling. But even more than these, he was a devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother and will be dearly missed.
Maurice was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City and served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus attaining a Third Degree Knight. As a member of the Lions Club in Sac City he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award and Quarter Century Club (25 year) Member award. He served on many of the committees and enjoyed helping with the Omelet breakfasts. Maurice was an avid reader.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; children: Christine (Randy) Batz of Sac City; Steven (Stacey) Luke of Elk Horn, IA; and Brad (Melissa) Luke of Lakeville, MN; six grandchildren: Brock, Ethan, Alison, Jacquelyn and Sarah Batz; and Tanner Sporleder; his brothers: Colin (Barbara) Luke of Des Moines, IA, and Alden (Lois) Luke of Lorton, VA. Other survivors include his sister-in-law: Judy (Jim) Peitz of Oregon City, OR; and brother-in-law Tom (Marilyn) Roth of Livingston, MT; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister Delores; sister-in-law Alice (Ray) Goreham; and brother-in-law Bill (Betty) Roth.
