James Donald Toms, age 84, of Lake View, IA, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at his home in Lake View. James was born on October 13, 1933, in Carroll, IA, to Ira and Julia (Kelly) Toms. He grew up in the Glidden, IA, area where he attended school. Following school, James enlisted in the United States Air Force.
On September 20, 1968, James was united in marriage to Vickie Lynn McFarland in Maryville, MO. James was blessed with two sons, Jerry and Alex, from a previous marriage. Together James and Vickie made their home in Lohrville where they were blessed with four children: Gary, Tyra, Jaylene, and Carmen.
James was baptized on February 14, 1971, at the United Methodist Church in Farnhamville, IA. He was currently a member of the Lakes United Methodist Church in Lake View.
James was a hard worker and his work ethic was a model for his children and grandchildren. He was self-employed and together with Vickie they owned and operated “Toms Red Top Café” in Lohrville from 1971 through 1991. Nobody was a stranger, he enjoyed visiting with all the customers and friends he made while he owned his restaurant. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and treasured spending time with family and friends. He loved his family and grandchildren, always attending their activities and special events. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Vickie of Lake View; son Gary D. Toms and wife Charlotte of Pensacola, FL; daughters: Tyra L. Toms-Conde and husband Juan of San Benito, TX, Jaylene A. Hansen and husband Loren of St. Joseph, MO and Carmen M. Thedford and husband Marvin of Ewa Beach, HI; 16 grandchildren: 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Jeanie Heuton and her husband Wendall of Carroll, IA; daughter-in-law Gayle Toms of Carroll, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Julia Toms; his sons: Jerry and Alex; eight sisters; and three brothers.
