Margaret Rose McGonigle

Margaret Rose (Zuber) McGonigle was born on March 20, 1922 in Geneva, New York. She was the second oldest child of Fritz and Frieda (Odermott) Zuber. From the age of 3, she was reared in Chicago with her two younger brothers, Henry and Bob.

Margaret met Don McGonigle in 1945 while he was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base. On January 25, 1947, they were married in Chicago, Illinois. Two days later, Don brought Margaret to Odebolt for their honeymoon where they decided to stay and raise their family. Don and Margaret operated the D&E Café through the birth of their first three children Dick, Jim and Julie, with Vickie soon to follow. Margaret always loved living in Odebolt. She brought her younger brother Bob to Odebolt for the last couple years of his high school. Margaret was reunited with her biological father and oldest brother at age 38, and she remained in close contact with them until their death.

Margaret kept her faith a big part of her daily life. She loved watching Biblical movies and was a very active member of the Odebolt Presbyterian Church. She was a Deacon, the first female elder on the session, superintendent and teacher of the Sunday School. She served on the finance Committee, the head of the Martha Guild, and Moderator of Presbyterian Women. She also loved to make quilts with the guild and enjoyed the countless hours she spent cleaning the old bricks for re-use when they remodeled the church. Margaret also enjoyed sewing, quilting, tube painting, crocheting, drawing, and playing cards with her family and friends. She volunteered her sewing talents at the Odebolt Nursing Home for decades. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Rebecca Lodge, but most of all she loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. After Don passed away, Margaret sponsored a child overseas for several years.

Margaret moved into the Odebolt Assisted Living in 2010, and then resided in the Odebolt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center until she went home to meet her Lord. Those left to cherish her memory include her children and their spouses: Dick and Lisa McGonigle of Houston, TX, Jim and Bette McGonigle of Urbandale, IA, Julie and Ron Miller of Maynard, IA, and Vickie and Pete Renze of Arthur, IA. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Betty Martiens of Mulvane, KS, Daisy Martiens of Groveland, IL, and Marilyn Zuber of Rochester, NY; and also many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
