Karen Ann Coon, age 72, of Sac City, IA, passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, IA. Karen was born on June 9, 1944, to Donald and Dorothy (Brown) Weddell at Loring Hospital in Sac City.  She grew up on the farm just north of town. Karen was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Sac City in 1945 and then later confirmed in 1956 at the United Methodist Church, where she remained a life-time member.  She attended Sac City Elementary School from K-5th grade and graduated from the Sac City High School in 1963. Karen continued her education at St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA, and then completed her LPN training at St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in Carroll, IA, in 1965.

On April 16, 1966, Karen was united in marriage to Larry Coon. This union was blessed with their daughter Teresa.  They later divorced on January 1, 1990. Karen started working at Park View Rehabilitation as an LPN on August 1, 1966.  She took pride in being a nurse and continued to work for 48 years until she retired on November 1, 2014.  Karen was very involved within the community.  She spent 8 years on the Sac City Council, was a member of the Sac Athletic Boosters, Sac City Ambassadors, Sac City Snowlovers club, and Quasquicentennial Committee.  She was instrumental in starting the Sac Community Rec Center and was also a member of the Sac City Saddle Club when it was around.

Karen enjoyed camping, cooking, traveling, riding motorcycles, riding snowmobiles, riding horses in her younger years, caring for people and animals, following the grandkids school activities, spending time with family and friends and overall just having a good time. Karen was a lady who loved to care and help others. She was always a good friend, never knew a stranger and always made a friend.

Survivors include her daughter Teresa (Greg) Bruening of Sac City, IA; sister Debi (Howard) Schutt of Woodward, IA; grandchildren: Austin and Madison Bruening; niece Stephanie (Troy) Birt of Woodward, IA; nephew John (Alison) Schutt of Granger, IA; and many friends.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Dorothy Weddell.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like any contributions to be made to the Loring Hospital; Unity Point Hospice; or the Animal Rescue League of Carroll, IA.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you Teresa. Karen was one great blessing in all of our lives. She knew how to make you smile and was a blessing as nurse at Park View for many many yrs. My mom loved working with her and listening to all her stories. The funniest memory I have of her was when you and I were roommates at WITCC and she came up to spend time a night with us. Security of coarse ended up at our dorm room lol. Live on the memories you have and she will always be in your heart. ”
