Velma Arlene Meyer, age 92, of Lake View, IA, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, IA. Velma was born on May 14, 1924, to Otto and Lena (Buse) Peters on a farm in Lake View, IA. Velma was baptized on May 18, 1924, and confirmed on June 25, 1938, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View, IA, where she remained a life-time member.  She attended country school in Lake View and graduated from the Lake View High School. Velma later received her teaching certificate from Buena Vista College and went on to teach for 5 years.

On March  8, 1948, Velma was united in marriage to Donald Duane Meyer. This union was blessed with 3 children: Mary, Marc, and Marsha. Velma loved being a housewife and mother. On the farm she enjoyed gardening, canning her vegetables from her garden, and quilting. Velma loved baking and was known for her delicious Sour Cream Raisin Pies. She was also very involved in the church, being a Sunday school teacher for 25 years, was a member of the Ladies Aid, and loved being able to help at church functions. Velma was a lady who loved to help others without being recognized for it and will be missed dearly by all of her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Don; children: Mary Meyer of Lake View, IA, Marc (Luanne) Meyer of West Des Moines, IA, and Marsha (Bill) Sample of Polk City, IA; grandchildren: Matthew (Eva) Meyer, Andrea Meyer, Jessica Sample, Joanna Sample, Brad Sample, and Theresa Sample; great-grandchildren: Addison Meyer, Jayden Pratt, and Abby Kile.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Lena; sisters Ione Heun and Evelyn Mesenbrink.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like any contributions to be made to the Emmanuel Lutheran Ladies Aid fund in Velma’s memory.

“Sending condolences to the family. My memories of Velma were family reunions as the Speaker Park or City Hall when the weather was bad. Also seeing her at the Carnival. But mostly a visit to the church when I was in the area and she always came up to me to ask how our branch of the family all were doing. Such a kind, caring and giving person and loved all, especially her Heavenly Father.”
