Grace S. Bruns, age 89, of Carnarvon, IA, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, December 18, 2016. Grace Sophia Fredrichs was born on September 20, 1927, at home in Viola Township, Sac County, IA, to Fred and Henrietta (Poen) Fredrichs. She attended country school through the eighth grade. Grace worked for various farm wives caring for their homes and children until December 7, 1952, when Grace was united in marriage to Theodore J. Bruns, Jr. at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Carnarvon, IA. They moved to Columbus, Georgia, and returned to Iowa and began farming when Ted was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. To this union were born three children: Charmaine, David, and Jerome.
Grace cared for her family and assisted Ted on the farm while her children were growing. Grace was employed for several years in the dietary department at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, IA. Ted passed away in 1980 and Grace continued to live on the farm and work until she retired.
Grace was a follower of Jesus Christ and was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Carnarvon, IA. She was very active at Emmanuel Presbyterian as pianist in her younger years and loved music, especially the old gospel hymns which she knew by heart. Grace held several church offices and was active in the women’s organizations throughout her adult life.
Grace enjoyed playing cards and celebrating birthdays and holidays with friends and family. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband Ted; parents Fred and Henrietta; brothers: Leroy, Leonard, and Herman.
She is survived by her three children: Charmaine (Michael) Diischer of Pocahontas, IA, David (Virginia) Bruns of Paradise, CA, and Jerome Bruns of Carnarvon, IA; ten grandchildren: Selena (Jacob) Morgan of Zachary, LA, Theodore Diischer of Estherville, IA and Paul (Tiffany) Diischer of Emmetsburg, IA, Brook (Jordon) Bruns-Sledge of Chico, CA, Kim (Ryan) Bruns-Wheeler of Chico, CA, Kris (Kurt) Bruns-Brock of Durham, CA, and Dan Bruns of Chico, CA, Stephanie (Charlie) Bruns-Paris of Waterloo, WI, Kalah (Tommy) Bruns of Wall Lake, IA, Sara (Tyson) Ernst of Vail, IA; seven great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; brothers: Don (Evelyn) Fredrichs of Wall Lake, IA, Ray (Jan) Fredrichs of Carnarvon, IA; sisters: Delores Freed of Dakota Dunes, SD, and Sophie Fredricks of Urbandale, IA, a sister-in-law Marilyn Fredrichs of Carnarvon IA, and other relatives and friends.
