Dewane Smith

Dewane Frank Smith, age 90, of Early, IA, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA. Dewane was born on June 14, 1923, in Fedora, South Dakota to Frank and Emma (Bushman) Smith. His family lived in Fedora until he was 10 and then moved to Lake City, IA and various locations in Iowa after that. He attended school in Fedora and Iowa through the eighth grade.

On June 10, 1945, Dewane was united in marriage to Betty Lucille Butner in Somers, IA. They would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in June. This union was blessed with a son Steven and daughter Judith.

Dewane farmed near Nemaha. He loved the farm life and never did retire. He enjoyed being on the farm and stayed active in the farming operations. He also enjoyed gardening, bowling and woodworking. He was a volunteer fireman in Nemaha and member of Nemaha Methodist Church in Nemaha where he enjoyed donating his services in any way he could. Dewane’s life was farming, but his love was for his family. Spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids brought him great joy.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; son Steven Dewane Smith of Denver, CO; daughter Judith Ann Summers and husband Richard of Littleton, CO; grandchildren: Tonja (Frank) Krier of Parker, CO, Tamara (Scott) Stangl of Parker, CO, Timothy (Tara) Summers of Castle Pines, CO, Travis (Silke) Smith of Aurora, CO, Andrea Smith of Denver, CO currently serving in the Peace Corps in Napal, and Arlen Smith of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren: Morgan Smith, Haley Smith, Cody Smith, Donovan Stangl, Brady Stangl, Kaile Smith and Meaghan Krier. Other survivors include his brothers: Alfred Smith of Lincoln, MO, and Donald Smith of Sac City, his sister: Irene (Cliff) Harris of Raymore, MO; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
