Dorothy Marie Wolfe-Schiferl, age 94, of Lake View, IA, passed away on November 24, 2016, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. She passed away peacefully on her journey home Thanksgiving morning surrounded by her family, which she loved dearly. Dorothy Marie Johnson was born on October 21, 1922, in Auburn, IA, to John and Maggie (Tebben) Johnson. She attended and graduated from Auburn High School. Growing up, Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends.
Dorothy met and married Maurice Wolfe during their high school years. At the time Maurice was living with his parents, who were constructing the Ulmer overpass, which of course, is no longer there. They were married in 1941, then traveled to New London, CT, where Dorothy became a Navy wife during WWII.
Dorothy was a lifelong Christian woman who loved God, family and her country. She was born, raised, and lived her Lutheran faith. She was very active in her church and enjoyed being an active member of the Ladies Aid at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Ladies Kitchen Band gave her so much enjoyment for years, often going to care facilities to entertain the residents. She also enjoyed quilt club and the meetings they had every month.
Growing up in a large family with lots of nieces and nephews there was always something going on. She loved when they got together to celebrate. Playing cards and even an occasional toddy would show up for them to enjoy. It was a time for making memories, spending quality time and making lifelong friendships with them. Times that her family will always cherish.
In 2011 Dorothy and her family were fortunate to be able to all travel to Alaska. Both Don and Mom’s families were able to make the cruise with them. Mom loved the family getting together on the trip and especially to see the Glaciers. She talked about the trip for many years. It truly was a special time for all the family.
Mom and Don loved to winter at Citrus Gardens in Mesa, AZ. In fact, that is where she met her wonderful husband Don Schiferl after their spouses had both passed away. They were able to go to dances several times a week and socialize with friends. Lots of the time you would find them in the activity hall. Mom also enjoyed spending time on the patio with her crossword puzzle books. Mom loved the weather in Mesa and having family close by.
The last four years at Blackhawk Life Care Center she truly enjoyed the many visits from her family and especially her grandkids. She enjoyed all of their activity: running around, getting ice cream cones and popcorn. On a good day she would play the piano and sing with them. The staff at Black Hawk all loved her dearly and they will all miss the quick comments she would so often add. There was never a birthday party she didn’t sing the birthday song for them. She loved her music in every way.
