Louis Ernest Mathwig was born March 17, 1927, to Paul Franz Mathwig and Amanda Aurelia (Weurdeman) Mathwig at the family home in Wall Lake, IA.  He passed away on November 5, 2016, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.

The Mathwig family had lived in Wall Lake for many years and Louis continued to live in the family home until entering Twilight Acres.  Louie attended school in Wall Lake and when he left school he went to Baltimore where his older sisters were living.  He stayed and worked there for a while and then came back to Iowa to join the Navy.  He served during WWII and in the Korean War, both times on aircraft carriers.  He then returned home to Wall Lake.  He was employed for many years at the gravel pit.  Louis loved to bowl and enjoyed watching all of the High School sports.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Amanda Mathwig; brother Albert; sister Edna Taylor, and infant sister Jeanette.

He is survived by his sisters: Alma Caldwell of Lake City, IA, Dorothy Mathwig of Papillion, NE, and Rosetta Olson of Cedar Rapids, IA.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

“I would like to say how very sorry I was to hear of Uncle Louie's passing. However, it also brought me great peace and joy to hear that in his last hours of life here on earth, he had expressed his desire to go to heaven. I believe that he is now reunited with his parents, his siblings, and other family members that have gone on before him. Rest well, Uncle Louie. ”

“Dearest Family of Louis Mathwig, I just want to say my thoughts and prayers are with you. Louie will be missed very much. He was a proud and thoughtful person. He loved his family dearly. I didn't get to see Uncle Louie very much but was glad to see him one last time in May. These times will be remembered.

Sincerely Joyce”
