Leo Fred William Werkmeister, age 78, of Lake View, IA, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2016, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View.
Leo was born on January 27, 1938, to Orie and Mathilda (Stoelk) Werkmeister in Sac City, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City and graduated from Sac City High School in 1955.
On June 1, 1957, Leo married his one and only love, Alice Katherine Drilling at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City. They were blessed with five children: Keith, Teri, Wendy, Traci, and Tami. They made their home in Lake View where Leo worked as a mechanic at Kelly Motors Ford Garage and for the city of Lake View in the Park Department. Leo retired in 2003. He was a volunteer fireman for Lake View for 49 years and member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
He liked camping and going to auctions and garage sales, always looking for bargains. As a grandfather, he enjoyed being with his grandkids. Giving them rides on the pontoon, teaching them to drive and helping them buy their first cars. After retirement, Leo enjoyed driving the combine, and hauling grain for Dean Stock.
Leo was a devoted and very loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will be dearly missed. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Alice of Lake View; his daughters: Teri Meyer of Lake View, Traci Hall and husband John of Omaha, and Tami Werkmeister of Lake View; four grandchildren: Capt. Andrew Meyer and wife Haylee of Manhattan, KS, and Jennifer, Holly and Katie Hall of Omaha, NE. Other survivors include his sister Sue Lange and husband Lester of Maplewood, MN; sister-in-law Linda Werkmeister of Sac City; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Orie and Mathilda Werkmeister; son Keith Werkmeister; daughter Wendy Werkmeister; and brother Kenneth Werkmeister.
