Luessa Marie Burkhartsmeyer

Luessa Marie Burkhartsmeyer, age 96, of Sac City, IA, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Riverview Manor Nursing Home in Bettendorf, IA.

Luessa was born on June 23, 1917, to Lyman and Henrietta (Frimel) Wilkinson in Vernal, Utah. Her family moved to Nebraska in 1918 and there, Luessa attended grade school and high school from Brewster, Nebraska. Luessa and Frank met in Glacier Park, Montana, where she worked in big hotels.. She was united in marriage to Frank on January 1, 1939 in Choteau, Montana. During World War II, they lived in Hastings, Nebraska, where their daughter Georgia was born. After WWII, they moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, where they lived for 22 years, and then left after the Rapid City flood in June of 1972. They moved to Sac City in 1984 and made it their home.

In Rapid City, Luessa had been a 4-H leader and a member of the County Extension’s Club. She and Frank attended Georgia’s many high school activites and traveled to Brookings, South Dakota to see SDSU activites. When she moved to Sac City, Luessa was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was apart of the St. Mary’s Guild. She enjoyed watching Jeopardy and reading the newspaper and thousands of books. She devoted her time to being a housewife and caring for her family as well as her beloved scottie. Luessa loved to sit and reminisce with family and friends about life. She will be dearly missed by many who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her daugher, Georgia C. Green, Rock Island, IL; brother, Lyman (Patricia) Wilkinson, Columbus, NE; brother-in-law, Robert Paulsen, Lincoln, NE; sister, Georgia Bishel, Hastings, NE; grandchildren: Catherine (Zachary) Young and Andrew G. Green; great-grandchildren: Beatrise Luessa and Ellanore Ikie Young, and many extended family members and friends.
