Jerry Roger Volkert, age 84, of Sac City, IA, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City following a tragic accident at his home.

     Jerry was born on June 8, 1931, in Sioux City, IA to Earle and Florence (Schau) Volkert.  He grew up in Onawa, IA where he graduated from high school and continued his education at Morningside College and Wayne State. He received his Masters at Colorado State. 

     On December 23, 1950, Jerry was united in marriage to Patricia Hopkins at the Congregational Church in Whiting, IA.  Two children were born to this union, Ann and Kurt.  He was inducted into the United State Army serving during the Korean War.  While Jerry was in the service Pat taught at several country schools around Sioux City.  Together they moved to Hartington, NE (1956-1959); and Reinbeck, IA (1960) where they taught. In 1961 they moved to Sac City where Jerry taught Shop and Drivers Ed classes.  He was in partnership in Pap & Volkert Construction, building Bonanza Buildings.  He also was a financial planner for IDS before retiring.  He enjoyed wood carving, golfing, fishing, hunting, reading, and was quite the handyman. 

     He loved helping others and will be remembered for his generosity, friendliness, kindness, and positive attitude.  His family always came first and he cared about his community too, volunteering at Loring Hospital for many years.  He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Sac City.

     Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  Survivors include his children: Ann and husband Doug Lawrence of Whiting, IA and Kurt Volkert of Sac City (fiancée Rita Felicio); five grandchildren: Erin Lillie of Minneapolis, MN, Casey Lillie of Sioux City; Abby Volkert of Sioux City, Evan Volkert of LeMars and Kollin Volkert of South Sioux City, NE; great-grandchild Noah Granato; extended family members and a host of friends.

     Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pat on September 17, 2013, brother Earle Volkert, Jr., and his dog Woody.
