Lester Albert Zeman was born February 1, 1918, near Bradgate, IA to Albert Zeman and Eva Smith Zeman, the second of four children. He passed August 10, 2015, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.
Les graduated from Bradgate High School in 1935 as Valedictorian of his high school class, then graduated from Coyne Electrical and Radio School in Chicago in 1937. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Boles on January 1, 1941. They moved to Sac City, opened a radio service shop in 1941, and had one son, Harvey.
Les enlisted in the Army in 1942 and obtained additional education in electrical engineering at the University of Iowa, then was stationed at Camp Crowder and Camp Edison before deployment with the 989th Signal Corps to the Pacific Theater during W.W. II. Les served as a T/Sgt at Milne Bay, Finschaven, Hollandia, New Guinea, in the invasion of Leyte and Luzon, and later in Kyoto in the occupation of Japan. He was honorably discharged November 30, 1945.
Following a divorce in January 1946, he returned to Sac City and formed a partnership with Merle Schoenthal to open L&M Electronics. Les married Janice Niles on January 23, 1948, in Rockwell City, IA. They became parents of John, Ruth, and Deborah.
In 1948, he brought the first television set to Sac City, a seven inch Philco. In 1952, he designed and built one of the first cable TV systems in the state and operated it until it was sold in 1968. Les served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, informally as Mayor of Bingville, and for twelve years was a trustee on the Sac City Library Board. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Sioux City Consistory, American Legion, VFW, and Radio Club of America.
Les was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, his parents, siblings Joyce Zarley of Des Moines and Milford Zeman of Humboldt, and Arthur Zeman of Gilmore City; his daughter-in-law Sharon Zeman of Belvidere, IL, and son-in-law Kurt Carnine.
He is survived by his children: Harvey Zeman of Belvidere, IL, John (Sandy) Zeman of Sac City, IA, Ruth (Mark) Brus of Sarasota, FL, and Deborah Carnine of Ames, IA; grandchildren: Michael Zeman of Ft. Worth, TX, Gary (Coco) Zeman of Belvidere, IL, Julie Strong of Elk Run Heights, IA, Jill (Jake) Bleed of Little Rock, AR, James Neville of Madison, WI, Victoria Brus of Sarasota, FL, Karen Carnine of Ankeny, IA, and Kelly Carnine of Ames, IA, as well as nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
