Erma Caroline Meyer, Age 95, of Sac City, IA went peacefully to be in her heavenly home with Jesus on Friday August 8, 2014 at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Erma Caroline Krohn was born at home on February 28, 1919, the fifth born of 12 children to Henry C. and Ethel (Darling) Krohn in Swift County, near Danvers, MN. Her parents traveled by train to the Lytton/Fonda area when Erma was two. She attended country school. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed at American Lutheran Church in Lytton, IA on November 25, 1936, where she was a lifetime member.
On April 6, 1938, Erma and Alfred O. Meyer were united in holy marriage at the Lutheran Church by Reverend Gold. They were blessed with three children: Leroy, Harlan, and Beverly. They made their home on several rental farms, Pearson, Kaiser and Kelly’s. In 1954, they purchased their own farm south of Lytton. Erma worked beside Alfred on the farm, raising the family, and working together with the dairy operation. Of course she always had chickens, ducks, and geese and in 1960’s They built a 12,750 chicken cage laying hen house. That became a huge part of her life, gathering eggs. She always had flower gardens, vegetable gardens, rows of sweet corn, and June and ever bearing strawberry patches. Until going to the care center, she was still picking her apples and making all sorts of goodies and freezing a lot of them.
Her relaxation was traveling on Sunday afternoons to see her brothers, sisters, and friends. She cleaned the American Lutheran Church for years in the 50’s. She enjoyed keeping up with her three children and their many activities. She played a big part in her daughters’ ventriloquist programs, by writing up all her performances. She traveled as Bev’s chaperone throughout Iowa when she was Iowa Dairy Princess. She will be missed by all those that knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children: Leroy (Carla) Meyer of Sac City, IA, Harlan (Connie) Meyer of Lytton, IA, and Beverly (Don) Vratny of Blue Springs, MO; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; four siblings: Marvin (Arlene) Krohn of Jackson, MN, Beulah Baskerville of Marshalltown, IA, Henry (Janice) Krohn Jr. of Waukee, IA and Arla (Milton) Dahlene of N. Dartmouth, MA; sister-in-law Curl Krohn of McKinney, TX; brother-in-law Hanford Voyles; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
