Phyllis Mae Pontious of Sac City, Iowa was born on November 25, 1927 to Darwin and Mary (Patterson) Nicholson of Lake City, Iowa. In 1930 the family moved to a farm east of Lytton. Phyllis accepted Christ and was baptized at 13 years old at the First Baptist Church in Rockwell City. Phyllis attended Lytton Consolidated School, graduating in 1945. Following graduation, she took a position at the Sac County Courthouse, where she worked for several years.

She was married to Frank J. Pontious on September 26, 1948 at the First Baptist Church in Sac City. They were blessed with a daughter, Susan Diane, on June 26, 1950 and later two sons, Bruce Wayne and James David.

Phyllis was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sac City, serving as church organist from 1946 until the church closed in 2009. She was also a church school teacher, a member of several boards of the church, Church Moderator for several years, and a member of the American Baptist Women’s group of Sac City, later becoming President of ABW of Region Ten (Iowa and Minnesota) women.

Her life was centered on her family, friends, home, and enjoying her family and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1970, Frank, LeRoy Nelson, and herself, traveled to Haiti on a Mission Trip. Life is never the same after you have seen the way some of the others of God’s family have to live. In 1995, she and Frank made a trip to Kodiak, Alaska where they worked in a Baptist Mission for six months, and they returned to Iowa knowing that God’s world was a great place to live and work in and that there are many wonderful people serving Him everywhere.
