Gwendolyn devoted much of her life to education and to the students she cherished. She served for many years as a teacher with Sac Community Schools in Sac City, Iowa, where she taught fourth grade elementary students and later worked in remedial reading at the middle school level. Gwendolyn earned both a Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa State Teachers College and a Master’s Degree in Education from Drake University, reflecting her lifelong commitment to teaching and personal growth.
On August 11,1954, she married the love of her life, Larry Spencer Martin. The couple shared 50 years of marriage before Larry’s passing. Together they enjoyed many adventures traveling throughout the United States and abroad, creating cherished memories along the way.
Gwendolyn also found joy in creative pursuits. She loved crafting and was especially known for making stuffed bears and other handmade items for her local church bazaar. Her creations reflected both her artistic spirit and her generous heart.
A devoted member of her community, Gwendolyn was active for many years in the First Presbyterian Church of Sac City, Iowa, and was also a proud member of the P.E.O. women’s organization, where she formed lasting friendships and supported educational opportunities for women.
She was preceded in death by her husband Larry, and is survived by her three children: Bradley D. Martin, who is married to Renee’ Tomasula; Brian D. Gwendolyn’s life was one of quiet service, devotion to family, and care for her community. Though her classroom may now be quiet, we hope the lessons she shared will continue to echo in the hearts and lives of those she taught and loved.
