Bret Wessendorf, age 58 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2025, at his home. Bret Franklin Wessendorf was born on January 23, 1967, in Sioux City, IA, the son of Ben and Sherry (Hooper) Busch.  He was welcomed home by his big sister, Kim, who he throughout his life, absolutely adored and looked up to. Bret was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Early, IA. He grew up in Early where he attended school. He graduated from Crestland High School in 1985.
On June 18, 1988, Bret married the love of his life, Amy Vauble, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City. This union was blessed with two sons, Paul and Adam. They raised their family in Sac City as Bret worked in construction around the area for many years. He later drove truck and eventually became a full-time caregiver for his father, Ben. Most recently, Bret was a caregiver for his mother.
Bret was a busybody who loved tinkering on things from the time he was just little. His mom could tell story after story of Bret taking things apart, even things he wasn’t supposed to, and never quite getting them put back together. He loved shooting off rockets as a little boy and later with his own boys, as well as flying his remote control airplane, and setting off fireworks. Bret always looked forward to pheasant season and hunted deer as well. He grew up fishing which was another thing he and his boys liked to do together. Bret loved his dirt bikes and in his younger years spent a lot of time riding them. He also liked collecting and shooting guns. He loved his music, and played guitar. Having the volume at full blast was pretty much always a sure thing. He was a good dad who made memories with his boys…whether it was shooting hoops or fireworks, he knew how to have fun with them.
Bret and Amy spent over forty years together. Through any ups and downs, their love and support for one another always remained. The two of them took a trip to the Black Hills that will always be remembered. They also liked antique shopping together.
Bret was so very proud of his children and adored his grandchildren. He loved the title of Papa and nothing brought him more happiness then seeing and spending time with all of them. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, son, and friend, who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Amy Wessendorf of Sac City, IA; children Paul Wessendorf of Des Moines, IA, and Adam (Sumer) Wessendorf of Wall Lake, IA; grandchildren: Scarlett, Leo, Theodore, Malcolm, Gerry, Dylan, and Trissana; mother Sherry Busch of Sac City, IA; sister Kim (Darlo) Rahn of Sac City, IA; nephew Josh (Jessica) Asmus and their daughter, Destini, of Lake City, IA; brothers-in-law Mike (Rhonda) Vauble of Sac City, IA, and Tim Vauble of Omaha, NE; close friends Amanda Ladehoff and Jim Taylor of Lytton, IA; other extended family members and friends.
Bret was preceded in death by his father, Ben Busch; grandparents Franklin and Eunice Hooper; parents-in-law Fred and Pat Vauble; and sister-in-law Darlis Vauble.
