Sonny was born on July 21, 1948, in Cherokee, IA, to parents Harold and Darlene (Yates) Lowe.
He worked as a farmer before becoming a tool and die maker at Noble Manufacturing in Sac City. As Noble was on the verge of closing, Sonny took a job at Montezuma Manufacturing in Montezuma, IA, where he worked for nine years. He continued his tool and die career until he retired.
Sonny was married and had two children, Becki and David, and later divorced. In 1977, he married Roxanne Hoffard and became a father to her two children, Misty and Jason. In 1978, Sonny and Roxanne were blessed with a son, Shawn.
In his younger days, Sonny was an avid figure eight racer. Some even called him a legend as he was the one to beat. Jason and Shawn followed in his footsteps by becoming part of the figure eight racing scene themselves.
Sonny enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards, and gambling. He could fix or build just about anything and liked woodworking. He loved spending time with his family and especially adored his grandchildren.
