Gregory Paul Fort, age 66, passed away on June 4, 2025, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Greg was born on November 12, 1958, to parents, Duane and Wilma (Herrold) Fort, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at the First United Methodist Church of Sac City. Greg attended elementary and high school in Sac City, home of the “Good Indians”. After he graduated in 1977, he immediately went to work for Auen Construction and later attended trade school in Webster City to further his education in bricklaying and masonry.
Greg was a self-made man who did not allow work to define him. Over his life, he was in construction, farming, insurance and the last twelve years in property management with Cypress Properties in Lexington, KY. Greg spent his formative years on the family farm north of Sac City and later moved to town for his first forty-four years of life. He then took his show on the road to Kansas City for a decade and became a big Royals and Chiefs fan. His final move was to Lexington where he quickly adopted the “bluegrass” way of life. Many fond and strong friendships were made with the people of Kentucky. Relationships were some of his greatest treasures. He had an uncanny ability to connect with people, no matter where he went. Known to most simply as "Forty", Greg had a presence which was impossible to miss. His wit was legendary - he was a force in life and could lift spirits with just a few words. Even in the most challenging moments, Greg found a way to make others smile and bring people together. He could best be described as a leader, teacher, protector, authentic, trustworthy and most of all an ideas man.
His adventures were legendary and plentiful. In fact, he commented on many occasions, “I’ve had the greatest life - with more to come”. Though he often came across as tough and unfiltered, those who knew him best understood the warmth beneath the exterior. In times of crisis, Greg’s loyalty ran deep, and his heart was generous beyond measure.
Greg is survived by his stepchildren, David Henrich of Aurora, IL, and Tracy (Rob) Ashley and children Blake & Wyatt (Beth) all of Moville, IA; siblings Patrice Gonzales of Las Vegas, NV, Clark (Svetlana) Fort of Storm Lake, IA, and Brian (Sue) Fort of Ankeny, IA; six nieces: Heather, Melissa, Sasha, Isabella, Kirby, Hilary; one nephew Garrett; countless extended family and friends across the nation.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Duane and Wilma Fort; aunts and uncles: Richard and Marcene Amick, Robert and Drucilla Rix, Channing and Phyllis Conger; cousins: David, Dennis, and Mike Rix and Cheryl Conger.
