Ernest Calvin Myers, age 91 of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on April 26, 2025, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, Iowa, with his family by his side.
Calvin was born on March 21, 1934, in Fonda, Iowa, the son of Clayton and Gusta (Henrich) Myers. The family moved to Douglas Township, Sac County Iowa, before the birth of his little sister Janice in 1938.
Calvin attended country school and then Sac City High School in Sac City, graduating with the class of 1952. In high school, Calvin lettered in basketball and football and sang in mixed chorus, boys' glee club and the choir.
Calvin joined the Army in 1954, serving until he was honorably discharged in 1957. He was a Specialist Third Class, in the Signal Corps, stationed in Europe. Calvin joined in the Korean War period and received the National Defense Service Medal in addition to qualifying for a Good Conduct Medal.
On June 14, 1958, Calvin was united in marriage to Liane Clarkin in Saint Mary's Catholic Church. The couple made their home on a farm north of Sac City where they raised their family. Over the next six years the couple welcomed four children: Matt, Stacy, Doug and Kathy. They farmed with his parents north of Sac City, moving in the early 1960s to the current homeplace which has been in Calvin's family since 1870.
Calvin loved to nap, go fishing, golfing and bowling but most of all he loved to play cards. He and Liane belonged to several card clubs. They often played cards at home, both determined to win. Calvin was a member of the Knights of Columbus. In the 1980s, Calvin was on advisory boards for First National Bank of Fonda and Colburn Insurance.
After he retired, Calvin and Liane spent a month each winter with their daughter Stacy in Florida enjoying the beautiful weather and their grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Liane of Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, Iowa; son Matt (Lana) Myers of Sac City; daughter Stacy Ardis of Coconut Creek, Florida; son Doug (Sharon) Myers of Sac City; and daughter Kathy Myers of Omaha, Nebraska. Survivors also include grandchildren John Myers of Sac City; Patrick (Nicole) Ardis and Paige Ardis (Chaz Taylor) of Florida; Nicole Meyer of Sac City; and Shelby Gruntorad of California, along with two great-grandchildren, Saylor and Lincoln. Calvin is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Gus Myers; his sister and her husband, Jan and Dorn Carlson; his in-laws John H and Pearl (Brown) Clarkin; brothers-in-law and their wives, Jack and Margaret Clarkin and Donn and Alleen Clarkin.
