Janet Ellerbrock, age 66 of Lytton, IA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, IA, surrounded by her family. Janet Lynn was born on September 24, 1958, to parents Paul and Eunice (Lovrien) Ellerbrock in Carroll, IA. She grew up on a farm outside of Auburn, IA, and was both baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. Janet attended Lake View-Auburn schools and graduated in 1977. She went on to study at Morningside University in Sioux City, IA. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree minoring in music, majoring in interdepartmental studies.
From there, Janet became an Aquatics Director for the city of Iowa City. Her job was overseeing eighty employees at any given time within three separate facilities. Janet worked in Iowa City for eighteen years before taking the same position in North Liberty. She worked there for five years and in 2010, moved to Lytton, IA, to be near family. Janet’s last employer was Fort Dodge Community REC, working as their Aquatics Director. She worked for them for thirteen years before retiring in 2023.
Janet served on the board of directors for the Iowa Parks and Recreation Association for many years, served as the aquatics chairperson for it and was their Certified Pool Operator Coordinator. She knew her job well which was quite evident in all she did while in each position she held.
In her free time, Janet enjoyed listening to music and reading. Her family meant the world to her so getting to spend time with them was always something she looked forward to. Over the years she took many trips either with them, or to see them, to places like Las Vegas, eastern Iowa, and Minneapolis, MN, to name a few. She enjoyed the outdoors, planting flowers every spring and summer, working out, and teaching fitness classes. Janet adored her cats, Lilly and Jonah.
When faced with adversity, Janet showed so much strength and acceptance. Her acceptance made it possible for all of her loved ones to navigate the journey alongside her. That’s who she was…a strong, loving, and empathetic person who cared so much for the ones she loved, and for everyone, really. Her faith was strong; she had a close relationship with her Lord and Savior. Rest assured she is now free of any and all pain cancer threw her way. She is rejoicing in the arms of the Lord, reunited with her parents once again.
She is survived by her siblings, Paula Murley of Sac City, IA, Jeff (Jo) Ellerbrock of Lytton, IA, Judy (Allen) Koessel of Lake View, IA, and Mary Ausborn of Sac City, IA; many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and
nephews, other extended family members and friends.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Eunice Ellerbrock; and niece Jaylin Ellerbrock.

“I am so sorry for your loss. Janet will be missed by so many people. I worked under Janet as a lifeguard, then pool manager and lesson coordinator, from 1988 to 1994 for the City of Iowa City. It was the best college job and I stayed on staff part-time another three years after graduation just because I liked working for Janet. She taught me so much about aquatics and influenced my decision to enter the field of parks and recreation as an aquatics professional. It was fun to transition to a work colleague with Janet and bounce ideas back and forth. We had so many long discussions about work but also about life and she helped plan a surprise weekend away for me to allow my husband to propose. That's a great boss! I will miss her as a friend and sounding board whenever I wanted to talk about work challenges. She helped shape the lives of so many under her wing. Rest in peace, my dear friend. ”
