LaVerna Diane Schoneboom, age 95 of Auburn, IA, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, IA. LaVerna was born on June 10, 1929, to parents George and Lillian (Wenck) Mohr. LaVerna was baptized on July 7, 1929, and confirmed on June 6, 1943, and was a life-long member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View. She attended country school and graduated from Lake View High School with the Class of 1946.
On June 27, 1949, LaVerna was united in marriage to Eldo Schoneboom. After having been raised on the family farm for 20 years, she and Eldo moved into the other house on the farm and made it their home for 74 years together until December 2023, when they moved permanently to Accura HealthCare of Lake City. They were looking forward to their 75th Wedding Anniversary celebration when Eldo passed on May 7, 2024. They were blessed with seven children: Ronnie, Brenda, Larry, Lori, Reggie, Lisa and Tina. The family is forever grateful for the love and compassion shown by the nurses, doctors, and staff to their parents during their time there.
During LaVerna’s life not only was she a homemaker and a caretaker for many, but she volunteered her time generously to many. She enjoyed Ladies Aid and many church and school activities and events while the kids were growing up. Together her family enjoyed Sunday picnics and holiday get-togethers with family and friends. Her children remember Sunday afternoons when there were always enough friends and neighbors to play cards or a game of basketball or football. Mom always had egg or tuna salad ready to feed the crew for supper.
Eldo and LaVerna enjoyed going dancing on Saturday nights, watching Lawrence Welk and Billy Graham. They took memorable trips together to Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, San Diego, San Francisco, Texas, Tijuana and to the Bahamas.
Over the years they also enjoyed Sunday night cruises, going to the casino, many bus trips to Branson, MO, fishing, grilling, gardening and canning, cooking and baking, reading and watching sports (especially Caitlin Clark), Wheel of Fortune and many cooking shows on T.V.
The most important thing to mom was her faith and family. She loved it when pastor, family and friends, and especially the kids and grandkids would stop by just to visit. She loved to reminisce about the history of our family, Sac County, and Iowa. A lot of memories were made and will always be held close to our hearts.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Brenda (Robert) Bengston, Larry (Cheri) Schoneboom, Lori (Marty) Mauer, Reggie Schoneboom, Lisa (Jim) Garrels, and Tina (Rick) Reiter; twelve grandchildren: Adam Bengtson, Ashley Bengtson, Jamie (Brenda) Schoneboom, Matthew Schoneboom, Nicci (Jason) Gruszeczka, Nick (Haley) Mauer, Heidi (Wade) Handlos, Alyssa (Tarkha) Barbedo, Ryan Schoneboom, Bradley Garrels, Brian Barrels, and Josie (Dustin) Bengford; sixteen great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Beverly (Don) Williams; brother-in-law Curtis (Denise) Schoneboom; many extended family members and friends.
LaVerna was preceded in death by her husband, Eldo Martin Schoneboom; son Ronald Schoneboom; parents George W. and Lillian D. (Wenck) Mohr; step father-in-law Tony Buse; parents-in-law Gerkie and Erna Schoneboom; sister Darlene (Merlin) Wollesen; sisters-in-law Mavis (Curtis) Baird and Ivadell (Delmar) Huisenga.
