Rose Bumsted, age 65 of Nemaha, IA, formerly of Soldier, IA, passed away unexpectedly on March 19, 2025, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Roseannabelle “Rose” Johnson was born on February 7, 1960, in Iowa City to parents Dorothy Jennings Johnson Volkmann and Vernon Volkmann Sr. She was baptized into the Christian faith on April 2, 1961, and later confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, IA, on April 21, 1974.
Rose attended Battle Creek Community Schools and graduated as salutatorian with the class of 1978, where she excelled at both choral and instrumental music. Her passion for music was life-long, and she continued to sing in the church, at weddings, funerals, and baptisms. She most recently sang at the weddings of her children and baptisms of her grandchildren.
Rose was a born protector and caregiver. These traits contributed largely to her lifelong career in nursing. She attended nursing school at St. Joe’s School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA, and graduated as a Registered Nurse with the Class of 1980. She continued her education at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1998 obtaining a 4.0 GPA while raising three small children. Rose was a well-rounded and dedicated nurse. Throughout her nursing career she worked in several different roles including the emergency room, school nurse, occupational health, hospice, and in long-term care.
On February 7, 1981 on her 21st birthday, Rose was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Bumsted at St. John Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. To this union three children were born: Kyle, Kristin, and Kevin. Rose was a dedicated mother, rarely missing any sporting event or extracurricular activity for her three children. She was always her children’s biggest supporter and transitioned seamlessly into being her grandchildren’s biggest supporter for all sporting, dance, church, or school functions.  She would beam with pride at the sight of any of her grandchildren, and especially loved talking about them.
Rose took great pride in being the family matriarch. In addition to her career, she was a dedicated homemaker and farmwife. For years she worked alongside Bob hauling grain and sorting hogs. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed hosting family dinners and cooking harvest meals for the crew. She LOVED to bake with her grandchildren, and her secret sugar cookie recipe was unmatched. In addition, she could sew, quilt, crochet, and knit. She was the “family jean patcher.” Of all the titles she held, her FAVORITE was Grandma.
Rose will be remembered for her fierce spirit, her devoted love for her family, especially her grandchildren, and her caring and nurturing demeanor.
She is survived by her husband of forty-four years, Bob Bumsted of Nemaha, IA; children Kyle (Leslie) Bumsted of Ericson, NE, Kristin (David) Hartje of Nemaha, IA, and Kevin (Sasha) Bumsted of Sac City, IA; grandchildren: Johannes and Ellinor Bumsted, Mason, Axel and Tucker Bumsted, and Ripp Hartje; sister Jessie Brown; brother Vernon (Kaye) Volkmann, Jr.; sisters-in-law Karen (Marvin) Koch, Judy Denny and Joan (Leonard) Trimpe; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Vernon Volkmann, Sr.; parents-in-law Lloyd and Helene Bumsted; brother David Johnson; twin siblings (in infancy);  brothers-in-law Fred Brown, Richard Bumsted and Michael Denny; and sister-in-law Patricia Bumsted.

“My deepest sympathy to you all. Rose knew how to light up room and was such a fun loving presence. She was truly one of the hardest working woman I have met. She made it all look so easy. I have only known Rose for a few years but quickly found a friend in her. She was one of the first people knocking on my door when my mom died to give me a hug, and would regularly check in on me just to see how I was doing. She always spoke so highly of you all and would have the biggest smile on her face as she spoke of all of you. May God help you find peace and blessings while navigating through this time of loss. And to Rose- thank you for being a friend to all 🤍”
