Sandi Weitzel, age 77 of Sac City, IA, went peacefully to heaven on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. She was at Park View Rehabilitation Center with her daughters by her side.
Sandra Sue Bruns was born on December 31, 1947, to parents Fred and Doris (Streed) Bruns in Carroll, IA. She grew up on a farm in Sac County alongside her two little (big) brothers. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City on February 1, 1948, and later confirmed there on April 15, 1962. Sandi helped on the farm and took care of her brothers.
Sandi attended school in Sac City and graduated from Sac City High School in 1966. She then attended Nettleton Business Training School in Sioux City, IA, from which she obtained a diploma in Executive Secretarial in July of 1967. In 1980, Sandi took a computer beginner’s course. She was employed as a secretary for Robert Currie, an attorney in Sac City for many years and she also helped at tax time for a local accountant.
On September 1, 1969, Sandi was united in marriage to Donald Eugene Weitzel at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City. The two met at the local grocery store where Donnie worked. They were happily married for thirty years before Donnie passed away in March 2000. Donnie and Sandi were blessed with four daughters, Tina (1970), Traci (1972), Teri (1974), and Tami (1980). Sandi took time away from work to raise the girls and opened her home to several friends providing in-home daycare for their children.
Once the girls were in school, Sandi went back to work as a housekeeper at Park View, Black Hawk Life Care Center, and also at Loring Hospital. She and Donnie lived in Sac City for most of their marriage before moving to Lake View, IA. They took their family on many camping and fishing trips over the years to Missouri, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Sandi kept busy at home tending to their large garden, canning, and taking care of her beautiful flower garden. Donnie and Sandi opened their home to four foreign exchange students over the years from all over the world.
In her later years, Sandi loved spending time with her ten grandchildren: Samantha Sue, Tyler (Hannah), Quentin (Amber), Melissa, Tiffany (Ben), Alicia (Brayden), Morgan (Jesse), Hope, Caleb, and J.J. and six (soon to be seven) great-grandchildren: Summer, Elena, Eliza, Samantha Jo, Remington, Cooper, and Andrew. They brought her so much joy and she was so very proud of each and every one of them; they were her whole world. She attended as many school and sporting events as she could and loved playing board games and coloring with them.
Sandi enjoyed playing Bingo, sewing, and working on word search puzzles. She had many favorite television shows including Wheel of Fortune, The Price Is Right, Jeopardy, Days Of Our Lives, NCIS, and Walker Texas Ranger. She also enjoyed collecting angels and bracelets. Sandi wrote in short hand, something she learned in business school, in her journal daily. Her girls plan to spend some time trying to decipher it over the next while.
She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her daughters, Tina (Todd) Haney of Lake View, IA, Traci Weitzel of Lake View, IA, Teri (Mike) Waggoner of Ankeny, IA, and Tami (James) Nordman of Lincoln, NE; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Patricia Rubendall and Rosey Bruns both of Sac City, IA; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
Sandi was preceded in death by her husband Don Weitzel; granddaughter Samantha Sue Weitzel; parents Fred and Doris Bruns; parents-in-law Marvin and Irene Weitzel; brothers Fred and Steve Bruns; and sister-in-law Cheryl Bruns.

“My thoughts and prayers to the Weitzel family for losing your mother. You've endured so much loss thru the years. I always admired your folks for ensuring you were all brought up in faith at St. Paul's where you could all be found on Sunday morning with the rest of us. May that same faith get you through the tough times as you grieve. Sometimes faith is the only thing that seems like will get you through. Embrace the memories and be a little at peace knowing she's holding that grandbaby of hers again and that she's reunited with her other family members.”
