William “Bill” Hott, age 74 of Lake View, IA, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. William Chester Hott was born on April 9, 1950, to parents Phillip and Adeline (Lunkenheimer) Hott in Storm Lake, IA. He grew up in Storm Lake where he attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from in 1968. Bill went on to earn his teaching degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.
Bill married the love of his life, Doris Glienke, on March 13, 1971, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.  This union was blessed with two children, Paul and Heather.
In his younger years, Bill was in several rock bands performing as a singer and guitar player.  Throughout his high school and college years, he taught guitar lessons.  For about 20 years, his summer job was working with his grandfather and uncle in the masonry business.  He was proud to point out to his children and grandchildren some of the homes and businesses in the area that he had helped build.
Bill started his teaching career in Dow City, IA, where he taught music for two years before being hired by the Wall Lake View Auburn School District where he would then teach music for the next thirty years. His love for what he did was unmatched. Bill enjoyed seeing his students excel and eventually venture out into the world, hoping music would always remain a part of their lives in one way or another. During his time at WLVA, Bill produced numerous all-state singers. He directed many musicals, arranged choir trips to perform with the American Symphony at St. Patrick’s Cathedral as well as the Lincoln Center in New York City, Washington D.C., San Francisco, CA, and the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He truly loved music and teaching others about it.  Bill’s family would like to express their gratitude to the students who both challenged and enhanced his musical career.  All of you were instrumental in pushing/helping him achieve the goals of his professional life.
He had a love and appreciation for the outdoors and could be found hunting or fishing in his free time. He particularly enjoyed it when one of his grandchildren caught the biggest fish of the day!  Over the years, he owned many golden retrievers and was excellent at training them for hunting.  They were his daily companions for his morning walks in nature.
While music played a huge part in Bill’s life, nothing was more important to him than his family. He was so proud of his children and adored being called Grandpa. Bill never missed an opportunity to brag about his children and grandchildren to friends and acquaintances.  He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him. May his memory be a blessing and may we all strive to live our lives with the same joy and passion that he did.
Bill is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Doris Hott of Lake View, IA; son Paul (Angie) Hott of Defiance, MO; daughter Heather (George) Moore of West Chester, OH; grandchildren Sydney and Tyler Hott, Emily, Isaiah and Ava Moore; brother Ron Hott (fiancé Becky Johnson) of Storm Lake, IA; several in-laws, nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Adeline Hott.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the development of a scholarship fund for aspiring musical talent.  Isaiah Moore, Bill’s grandson, has set up a Go Fund Me account for the endeavor.  The family would be especially pleased to help others teach and share their passion and joy of music as “Mr. Hott” did throughout his life.

“Mr. Hott, you wouldn't believe how many choir songs I still have memorized. Rest in peace.”

“It was an absolute pleasure to be Mr. Hott's high school accompanist from the beginning of school in 2000 until he retired. What a patient person as I, too, learned more about music through his choir instruction and became a better accompanist. He got the best out of all the students who truly wanted to become better singers. He had so many success stories of students who continued their musical talents beyond high school. Too many to name, really!! I'm sure they remember all those evening practices for contests earning the highest ratings and the musicals , too, which drew large crowds and community compliments. It was a pleasure to accompany them while they were in high school as well as over the years. Lots of memories. Thinking of Doris, Paul, Heather, and their families at this time. Mr. Hott will be remembered for his music accomplishments, but also for the fishing and hunting stories he told relaxing with his family and friends on many of the lakes. ”

“Like many students, I had the honor and privilege of studying music with Mr. Hott at WLVA. He got me to come out of my shell and be the best person I could be. I probably learned more from him than most of my other teachers. My sympathies to Doris, Paul Heather and families.”

“We are grateful to have known Bill and his family. Bill leaves his legacy of his love of music to his students as well as to his family and friends. We feel blessed to have Bill and Doris son, Paul, as our son-in-law. He is a great husband and father for our daughter and our grandchildren. He also leaves a legacy of his love for nature whether fishing or hunting. He was a great "camping and fishing guide" to Canada several years ago for his son, Paul and his father-in-law, Dave. Sending our condolences and love to the Hott Family. Dave and Sharyl Van Dorin”

“My deepest sympathies to Doris and all of Bill's family. I consider Bill my strongest mentor as a choral director. We had many many conversations about the psychology of teaching and how to motivate students to strive for excellence. He challenged his singers and all of us knew how much he cared. RIP, Bill. Yours was a life well lived. ”

“While I'm fairly certain I am personally responsible for a few of those gray hairs, the memories are fabulous! From singing Aquarius and The Doobie Brothers, to Mame, All State, solos and small groups, recording an album and so much more, Mr. Hott (I still cant call him Bill!) had us do it all! I simply would not be the person I am today without his push back in the 80's! My deep condolences to all of the Hott family. May wonderful memories fill your heart and bring you peace. ”

“One hasn't lived until you've been a member of a "garage" rock band that performed in North Sioux City, in 1968, on the "Dune's" tiny elevated stage with Bill Hott swinging a red-sunburst Gibson Firebird while stepping in-time with the "Go-Go" girl! . Ah- great memories of great times! Bill was a gifted teacher and musician, but more than all else, a good person and I was saddened to learn of his passing. To Doris, your children, and other family members and friends, my condolences for your loss”

“My condolences go out to the Hott family. I did not know Bill but I have the pleasure of working with and becoming close friends with his son Paul. After knowing Paul all these years and experiencing first hand his generosity, servant leadership, kindness, and friendship - I see he gets it from his dad! Thoughts and prayers to the family. ”

“I never knew Bill Hott, but I feel as though I did after reading a beautiful reference to his life. I am, however, grateful for him leaving this world better than he found it through the sharing of his talents, and for his son, Paul Hott. I've gotten to know Paul through his mentorship of our business. Paul shared his love of music with my business partner and me and his decision to pursue a major in Music at the University of Iowa, which ultimately transitioned to Business Leadership. I now see where Paul's passion for music started, and the joy Bill passed onto so many is evident. Proverbs 22:1 states "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold" and Proverbs 17:6 says "Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers." Thank you Bill and Doris for your faith, loving others and raising up the next generation to continue this legacy. Our business is forever grateful and so are so many others. Peace, love and blessings upon your family through this difficult time of loss!”

“Mr. Hott was a phenomenal choir instructor, and inspired me with my love for music. He never gave up, and our trio finally made All State our senior year! I also sang on my wedding day, and I attribute my level of confidence to him as well. He will be missed, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family. May God bless them!”

“Mr. Hott was the most influential person in my life, he taught us how to read music. How to count with clap sheets, I was very fortunate to have the foundation of music from him.. We were a huge successful Choir, and many of us went on to become professional musicians. Even if we didn't go on into music professionally he impacted our lives greatly.. he will regretfully be missed.. my deepest sympathy to his wonderful family, Doris, Paul, & Heather!”

“It's no secret that Mr. Hott created a music legacy. Because of what he did for students - in expecting the best of our efforts - we ended up the better for it. Music is not my livelihood, but it has followed me everywhere in life and continues to add value to my life. Thank you, Mr. Hott, for adding to my life in ways I could never understand in my youth. My deepest sympathy and prayers to the Hott family. May he rest in peace and enjoy a little heavenly music.”
