Fred Bruns, age 73 of Sac City, IA, passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Frederick Theodore Bruns was born on April 7, 1951, to parents Fred and Doris (Streed) Bruns in Carroll, IA. He, along with his two siblings, grew up on a farm in Sac County. Fred was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City and later confirmed there in 1965. He worked as a farmhand for Fred Scharn throughout high school. Fred graduated from Sac City High School with the class of 1969. After that, he attended Iowa State University from which he obtained an associate degree.
On June 11, 1971, Fred married the love of his life, Rosemary Anita Ort, at the United Methodist Church in Nemaha, IA. The two met at the A&W in Sac City just before Fred left for college. This union was blessed with three children, Shawn, Chad, and Dylan. They raised their family in Sac City, where Fred worked at the local John Deere dealer, Greenline Equipment. Fred worked at Greenline for forty-three years, retiring in 2014. Wanting to stay busy, Fred began working for Home Choices providing in-home care for the elderly. Over the years he cared for many individuals that he grew near and dear to. In 2018, he was hired at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home as support staff. Fred was the one to greet you at the door, shake your hand, and sometimes even lean in for a hug. You couldn’t let his straight face fool you, he really was a softie when it came right down to it.
When the two weren’t working, Fred and Rosey enjoyed doing many things together, including snowmobiling back in the day. They rode all over with a local group and had a lot of fun. They enjoyed tending to their backyard pond and garden area together and also attended stock car races in Alta on a pretty regular basis. They also enjoyed dancing to live music, especially when The Senders were playing locally. Antiquing and thrift store shopping was something else they enjoyed doing together.
Family was always a priority to Fred. He and Rosey spent many hours on the road over the years traveling to see their kids and grandkids. They enjoyed watching their grandkids extracurricular activities and often found themselves spending time at their homes helping with remodel projects. Fred was pretty close to his dad and always looked forward to going fishing with him. He also had fun restoring a few antique tractors with his son, Chad. Because he liked staying busy, he almost always had some kind of project going.
He collected all things John Deere and spent a lot of time woodworking, one of his favorite hobbies. He also enjoyed hunting with his boys.
Fred served his church faithfully throughout his life. For many years, he was Head Usher, President, and was recently re-elected to the position of Vice President. Fred embodied the history of St. Paul’s and his wisdom regarding the operation will be greatly missed there.
Fred served his community in many ways as well. He served on the Sac Education Foundation (president for some of that time), on the Sac City Museum Board (president for some of that time), and was a Boy Scout Leader and Master for many years.
While his earthly body is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the many memories made and love shared with all who knew him. Rest assured he is rejoicing in a new healthy body alongside his Lord and Savior, awaiting to once again be reunited with his loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, Rosey Bruns of Sac City, IA; children Shawn (Mike) Larson of Clear Lake, IA, Chad Bruns of Madrid, IA, and Dylan Bruns (Megan) of Sac City, IA; grandchildren: Drew Larson (fiancée Jordan), Ben Larson, Morgan Bruns, Erica Bruns, and Boone Bruns; great-grandson Vicerys Larson; sister Sandra Weitzel of Sac City, IA; brother-in-law Paul (Brenda) Ort of Sioux Rapids, IA; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Doris Bruns; parents-in-law Kenneth and Ella Ort; brother Steven Bruns; brothers-in-law Don Weitzel, Virgil Ort, Hugh Ort, and Lorence Ort.
