Freda Glass-Meyer, age 83 of Schaller, IA, formerly of Sac City, IA, joined her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City. Freda Louise Manthe was born on June 19, 1941, the youngest of eleven children, to parents William and Louise (Haupte) Manthe at home in Easton, KS. She was baptized at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake View, IA as a young teen. Freda attended Viola #2 Country School through the eighth grade and then attended high school in Lake View. She graduated in 1959 with the last class to graduate from Lake View High School before it merged with Auburn the following year.
Growing up Freda’s jobs took her from babysitting, detasseling corn, and being a car hop at Tjaden’s, to waitressing at the Indian Village and The East End, a cook at Goodies Drive In and being a bartender at The Prime Rib.
On August 8, 1958, Freda married Larry Glass at the Methodist Church in Cassville, MO. This union was blessed with three children, Tom, Deb, and Stacey. Larry and Freda owned and operated the bowling alley on East Main Street in Sac City along with partners Dick and Janice Larson. The four of them then built a new bowling alley, Indian Lanes, where it currently sits on North 13th Street and remained owners until selling their share to Jack and Renita Glass. It was then that Freda began working at Park View Manor in Sac City as a cook. She became the Dietary Supervisor and remained in that position until her retirement in 1997.
Sadly, Larry passed away at the age of 49. Freda found companionship and love once again in Dale Meyer. The two were united in marriage on September 15, 1996. They made their home together on a farm outside of Schaller. During the first several years of their marriage, Freda rode in the semi with Dale as they traveled from coast to coast as well as up into Canada. Freda was able to see the 49 contiguous states and on one trip saw the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the same week.
Freda enjoyed traveling, visiting with friends, and attending school plays and sporting events her grandchildren were in. She was so proud of her children and always looked forward to spending time with them and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Freda had a great group of friends that she enjoyed playing cards with at Hutch’s café weekly. She spent countless hours crocheting afghans, table doilies, and baby clothes. She was very proud to be awarded the Grand Champion ribbon for her entry of a baptism gown in the Sac County Fair. She was a humble woman but couldn’t help but beam with pride when she saw that huge ribbon hanging next to her name.
Freda’s faith was very important to her. It wasn’t just observed on holidays, it was something she lived and practiced daily. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was confirmed there. She also served on many committees at church.
Freda was a blessing to many and will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband of twenty-eight years, Dale Meyer of Schaller, IA; daughters Deb (Doug) Tillma of Jasper, MN, and Stacey (Jeff) Ryan of Lake View, IA; stepchildren Vicki Raymer, Dale Jr. (Angela) Meyer of Lincoln, IA, Gary (Barb) Meyer of Port Orange, FL, and Richard (Deanna) Meyer of Manson, IA; grandchildren Kessie (Jason) Schwarte, Amy (Dave) Hedberg, Danielle Glass, Katie Ryan, Dale Alan Goeble, Amanda Sweet, Larry Sweet, Christian Meyer, Cody Meyer, Andrew Meyer, Gabi (Gage) Hutchinson, Dillon Meyer, Logan Meyer, and Emily Meyer; many great-grandchildren; siblings Eileen Quinley, Edna (Norman) Moore, and Pauline (Dale) Peyton; sister-in-law Jo Manthe; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
