Bret Schoon, age 27 of Lake City, IA, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA, surrounded by his family. Bret Austin Schoon was born on August 28, 1997, to parents Lori Fertig and Jeffrey Schoon. He was baptized in 2008 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View, IA. He was diagnosed at birth with cystic fibrosis. Bret attended grade school in Pocahontas, IA, and his whole life was like a balancing act of trying to keep up with school work, friendships, and family due to so many hospital stays in Iowa City throughout his life. He later attended East Sac County High School.
Growing up Bret loved hanging out with his friends, gaming on his PlayStation, lifting weights, and watch UFC…of course cheering the loudest for his favorite fighter, Conor McGregor. Bret loved his German Shepherd, Ellie, and it showed as she easily got most of his attention.
Bret gave off an energy that brightened the room, no matter where he went. He was a light to/for everyone he met, every day. He was always making people laugh with his outrageous sense of humor. He loved his family dearly and always put them first. Bret made it a point to make others happy, always. His time here on earth was cut way too short but his light will never stop shining in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his mother, Lori (Fertig) Huffman of Lake City, IA; father Jeffrey Schoon of Iowa City, IA; siblings: Jeffrey Heater, Donny (Cassie) Mann, Rachel Mann, Tommy (Kalah) Mann, and Brittany Schoon (Tyler Lawler); grandmother Nancy Fertig; many nieces and nephews whom he adored; many extended family members and friends.
Bret was preceded in death by his sister, Trish Mann; grandparents Karen McKenna, Jerry Schoon, and Jim Fertig; aunt LuAnn Kennebeck; cousins Jeremy Fertig and Makayla Razes.
