Louise Drilling, age 101 of Lake View, IA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Ellen Louise Drilling was born on May 22, 1923, to parents Lloyd and Grace (Pilcher) Bell in Longton, KS. She often told stories of fishing in the farm ponds, riding the ponies, and checking for scorpions in her shoes.
Louise met her husband, Edward Drilling, in Kansas City, where she was studying to be a teacher and he was in watchmaker school. They married in 1948 and moved to Lake View, where Ed grew up.
Many people remember Mrs. Drilling as their third grade school teacher in Lake View. Louise enjoyed giving manicures at the nursing home, playing bridge with friends, walking around town, making pies, and camping in Texas.
Most of all, Louise loved to see her family and friends. She was always so happy to see everyone and grateful for the joy that they brought her. She often said she had a great life and was so excited to live so long. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Louise is survived by her sons, Edward Drilling III and Lloyd (Linda) Drilling; grandchildren Jamie Wirth, Lauren (Jason) Straight, Joseph Drilling, Jack (Jera) Drilling; six great-grandchildren; many extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Drilling; parents Lloyd and Grace Bell; brothers Lloyd Bell and William Bell.
The family would like to thank everyone for the many acts of kindness and prayers they have received and for the love and care always shown to Louise throughout her life. In addition, the family thanks the staff at Black Hawk Life Care Center for the wonderful care Louise received during her time there.

“I will always remember Mrs. Drilling as a student and again as an adult. As a small boy in her third-grade class, I was intimidated by her, but I somehow understood she wanted our education to be productive and meaningful. As an adult I was better able to realize her warmth and compassion for her students and former students. Peace to you, Mrs. Drilling, and thank you for your generosity to so many others like me. ”
