Elaine Mauer, age 91 of Sac City, IA, formerly of Tujunga, CA, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 12, 2024, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City. Lois Elaine Quail was born on September 22, 1932, to parents Vern and Mabel (Shadle) Quail, in rural Sac City.
Elaine received her education in rural schools through the eighth grade and graduated from Sac City High School in 1951. During her senior year, she enrolled in the school work program and worked for Attorney Charles Mather. After graduating, she worked for Hy-Pop Popcorn Company until moving to California.
Elaine met John Mauer of Lake View, IA, through a blind date. After dating for several years, they were married in the First Christian Church in Sac City on September 16, 1956. Soon after, they moved to Glendale, CA, then to Sunland, CA, and then to Tujunga, CA, where they lived until John’s death in 2022.
Elaine worked forty years in the accounting department for Flying Tigers Airline, which was bought out by Tiger Airlines and eventually Federal Express. She retired in 1997.
Elaine’s hobbies were embroidering, baking, and flower gardening. She loved flowers and spent hours planting flowers in their backyard. They lived up on a hill and to help prevent erosion, Elaine planted ice plant all along their hillside; it was a beautiful sight to see. She and John enjoyed riding the motorcycle out into the canyon as well as short trips to McDonalds for coffee.
After losing her husband of 65 years, Elaine moved back to Sac City and lived with her sister, Sally, until moving to Park View. She was a loving, devoted, and caring person who will be missed dearly by her family and all that knew and loved her. Rest assured she is once again alongside the love of her life, resting in God’s beautiful paradise that is filled with flowers and never-ending motorcycle rides.
Elaine leaves to mourn her passing three sisters, Sally Anglum of Sac City, IA, Josephine Schmidt of Lake View, IA, and Wilma Straus of Early, IA; sisters-in-law Virginia Holland of Golden, CO, and Muriel Kerr of TX; numerous nephews, nieces, other extended family members and friends.
Those preceding her in death were parents Vern and Mabel Quail; mother-in-law Violet Mauer; brothers William Dorrh (Mildred) Quail, Harold (Elva Mae) Quail, Leonard (Joyce) Quail, and Gerald Quail; sisters Doris (Edwin) Stoffregen, Phyllis (Maynard) Lucht, and Patricia (Kenneth) Ernst.

“She's my aunt. I didn't get to see her much. Went to California a couple times before I graduated and stayed with them for a few days. I didn't even know she moved back to sac city until aunt sally called saying she passed. I'm 56 now wishing I could go back and see my relatives. Make sure to take the time to enjoy your life and your family. You missed aunt Elaine! Lots of love to family and friends!”
