Leon Rubendall, age 74 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center with his wife, Roxy, at his side. Leon Dee Rubendall was born on June 24, 1949, to parents Oscar and Betty (Finley) Rubendall in Sac City. He, along with his eight siblings, one being his twin brother Lonnie, grew up on a farm outside of Sac City. He was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Sac City. Leon attended country school through the fifth grade before attending in town starting in the sixth grade. He graduated from Sac City High School with the class of 1967. Leon served in the United States Army from May 19, 1969 – September 18, 1969, and then in the United States Army Reserve until 1975.
After graduating high school, Leon worked at a local gas station and then as a truck driver for Noble Manufacturing. He then drove truck for a year for Crouse Cartage in Carroll, IA, before being hired by Sac County Secondary Roads. Leon worked for the county for thirty-two years before retiring in 2014. After he retired, he enjoyed driving truck to help several area farmers every fall.
Leon was blessed with two sons, Bryan and Curtis. On August 30, 1990, he married Roxy Hoft in Deadwood, SD. This union added to his family two stepdaughters, Shelly and Angie.
Leon loved to fish. His love of being out on the lake to fish led to him purchasing several cabins over the years in Minnesota, three to be exact. Leon enjoyed spending time at the cabin regardless of the drive time to get there. He went on a pretty regular basis during the warmer months. Roxy went along at times, as did many of his friends over the years. After selling the cabin in 2022, he found himself taking trips to Chamberlain, SD, to fish.
Leon planted a large garden every spring and he enjoyed being outside tending to it. He was always happy to share his harvest with friends and family. When inside the house he could be found watching RFD TV or the Food Network channel. He enjoyed cooking specific things things he liked, especially when someone would mention something he hadn’t had in awhile.
After Leon and Roxy both retired, they decided to spend their winters in Texas on South Padre Island. They met many new friends while there over the past seven years and kept in touch with most of them throughout the year. In fact, every July the group gathers in Iowa for a reunion of sorts. Leon always looked forward to this. He was a quiet and somewhat opinionated man but if he loved you, you knew it. He will be missed dearly by his family and all who knew and loved him.
