Edith Fischer, age 99 of Story City, IA, formerly of Wall Lake, IA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Edith Armonat was born on July 26, 1923, to parents Otto and Alwine (Mielke) Armonat in Hopfendorf, Der Kreis, Pillkallen, East Prussia. She grew up and attended school in Germany.
Edith married Rudolf Beyer and they were blessed with a son, Klaus. She lived during WW11 and lost a baby during that incredibly difficult time. Rudolf passed away and she would later marry Christian Fischer and they were blessed with a daughter, Heidi. Edith worked in a greenhouse when she lived in Germany and loved gardening ever since. In 1962, she and her family immigrated to the United States. They settled in Wall Lake where Edith worked at the National Oats Popcorn Plant and then at Cookies BBQ Sauce for many years. She was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake.
Edith loved being outside in the garden. She always planted and cared for one every spring and summer. She enjoyed playing polka music and getting together for coffee with the ladies. Edith liked to keep her mind sharp by playing dice and card games with her friends and family. She was an amazing cook and loved treating others with authentic German dishes such as Konigsberger Klopse (potatoes and meatballs), Flinsens (like a crepe), Katufulwurst (potato sausage), and Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes). She loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending every moment she could with them. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Jamie (Jesse) Cochran of Slater, IA, and Jason (Nikki) Beyer of IA; great-grandchildren Avaree, Madison, Desaray, Natalee, and Austin of Slater, IA, Mercedes and Jory Beyer of IA; many other extended family members and friends.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Alwine Armonat; husbands Rudolf Beyer and Christian Fischer; son Klaus Beyer; daughter Heidi Beaird; brothers Fritz Armonat and Lothar Abrat; sisters Waltraud Janek, Gertrude Neuendorf, and Erna Arnold Brademann.
