Bill Fischer, age 87 of Carnarvon, IA, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, IA. William Franklin Fischer was born on February 18, 1935, to parents Gerd and Genevieve (Hamilton) Fischer on their farm just outside of Carnarvon. He was raised there and attended country school nearby through the eighth grade. He would often tell the story of how he was lucky to have had a pony to ride to school every day. Bill was a life-long member of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Carnarvon where he was both baptized and confirmed. He was an active member of the church and helped maintain the church cemetery.
On March 10, 1957, Bill married Shirley LaVonne Vauble at the First Christian Church in Sac City, IA. This union was blessed with five children: Carolyn, Bonnie, Donald, Patricia, and Michael. Together they raised their family on a farm south of Carnarvon.
Bill farmed all his life and loved Midwest small town living. He made sure he stayed up on things by going to town and gathering with locals for coffee every morning. He was always up for good conversation and never met a stranger. He loved Sunday afternoon drives around the countryside checking the crops and simply enjoying the beauty of the land. He also liked tinkering on farm equipment and for many years, shelled corn for other area farmers.
Bill, Shirley, and the kids often took trips to visit family as spending time with them was important. He loved family gatherings and playing cards. Bill and Shirley also enjoyed their weekly trips to nearby casinos. Bill will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Rest assured he has entered God’s beautiful kingdom where he and Shirley have been reunited for eternity.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Carolyn (James) Gough of Woodward, IA, Bonnie Grunwald of Auburn, IA, Patricia (Maxwell) Hicks of Crystal City, MO, and Michael Fischer (friend April Sondgeroth) of Carnarvon, IA; grandchildren: Kari Stewart (friend Steve), Julie Hall, Robert Hall, Kelly (Erik) Whiton, James Gough (friend Stephanie), Cody Grunwald, Cheyenne (Zachary) Brinson, Tyler Hicks, Eric Fischer, Emily Fischer, Ethan Fischer, and Adam Denney; great-grandchildren: Aaron, Zachary, Anthony, Nathan, Austin, Colton, Ashley, Caleb, Jordyn, Kyson, Hudson, Greyson, Mason, Stella, Skyler, and Makayla; great-great grandchildren, Athena, Karli, Emma, Wyatt, Laura, and Millie; brother John (Micki) Fischer; sister Kay Fischer; brothers-in-law Keith Dixon and Robert Collins; many other extended family members and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Fischer; parents Gerd and Genevieve Fischer; parents-in-law Ray and Catherine Vauble; son Donald Fischer; brother Raymond Fischer; sisters Alice Collins and Margaret Dixon.
