Kathryn Hansen, age 101 of Coralville, IA, formerly of Sac City, IA, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at The Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County in Iowa City, IA, with family by her side.
Kathryn Faye Mitchell Hansen was born August 4th, 1921, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Harold and Hazel Mitchell. Her father never got to meet her as he passed away before she was born from complications while serving in the Army during World War I. Kathryn was raised by her grandparents on a farm in Rodney, Iowa, while her mother taught in a country school a distance away. They eventually ended up together in Smithland, Iowa, where she graduated, and also met and married Marvin Hansen of Danbury, Iowa.
Marvin and Kathryn moved a total of 7 times while raising their 3 children: Gary, Sandra, and Dennis. In 1954, they settled in Sac City. Here, Marvin took ownership of the Buick, Olds and Pontiac car dealership, where his 2 sons eventually joined him. The family became members of the Methodist Church and Kathryn was active in the Women’s Circle.
As a family, they loved to go fishing, hunting and golfing together. They would take summer fishing trips to Colorado, Minnesota and Canada. Kathryn was always the first one to catch a fish. She was known as “The Fish Finder.” They could also regularly be found competing in couples golf tournaments, of which they won quite a few.
In retirement, Marvin and Kathryn enjoyed traveling. They took yearly fishing trips to a cabin on Leech Lake, Minnesota. Florida, Hawaii, and Alaska were also a few of their favorite vacation spots. The two wintered in McAllen, Texas 6 months out of the year for over 35 years.
In 1998, Marvin passed away at 80 years old and was buried in Oakland Cemetery in Sac City, Iowa. They were married for 58 years. Kathryn continued to winter in Texas and took an occasional cruise. But after having both hips replaced, 1 shoulder replaced, and beating 2 separate bouts of colon cancer, Kathryn could no longer live independently. She moved to Coralville, Iowa in 2016 to live with her daughter, Sandy, and son-in-law, Mike. Here she enjoyed playing games, doing puzzles and going to the casinos to get her fill of the all-you-can-eat crab legs and lobster buffets!
She is survived by her children: Gary Hansen (Pearl), Sac City, IA; Sandra Schroeder (Michael), Coralville, IA; and Dennis Hansen, Sac City, IA. Also, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Kathryn’s memory to Unity Church, Sac City, Iowa.
