Wayne Werner, age 68 of Schaller, IA, passed away on Monday, November 7, 2022, at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City, IA, surrounded by his loved ones. Wayne Albert Werner was born on November 18, 1953, in Schaller to parents Walter Eugene and Wilma (Mendenhall) Werner, the third of four children. He was baptized on December 20, 1953, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller by Pastor Holstein, and confirmed on April 7, 1968, at Faith Lutheran Church in Early, IA, by Pastor William Jimm. He grew up on a farm southwest of Early. Wayne attended Crestland Elementary School and graduated from Crestland High School with the Class of 1972.
On November 16, 1975, Wayne married Karen Marie Mentzer at the United Methodist Church in Early. This union was blessed with three children, Stephannie, Trenton, and Clayton. Wayne farmed from the time he was a young child alongside his father up until about 2010. He would often speak of waking up early as a young boy to milk the cows before leaving for school. He was raised to know what hard work was and that is exactly how the rest of his life would go. He was a very particular man who wanted things just so, even when it came to his land and how it was to be farmed. He served on the Sac County Soil and Conservation Board for 25 years. After Wayne retired from the farming operation, he continued to help other area farmers during planting/harvesting seasons. He also drove truck for Goettsch Trucking and Ag Partners for a while.
Wayne liked staying busy. Being outside gardening, landscaping, or mowing with one of his four lawnmowers made him happy. He cared a lot about how his yard and home looked, which was easy to see. He was an incredibly supportive husband and didn’t blink an eye when it came to cleaning the house, cooking meals, or working on home improvement projects. He was a very organized man who was more often than not, awake hours before others to get things going for the day. He would be the first one to work to make sure the coffee was on for everyone else. He was a true farmer. One that didn’t care to venture away from home much because there was ‘always something to do’ at the farm. Wayne did like antiques and enjoyed short trips to places like Galena, IL, to visit the shops with Karen. He also enjoyed collecting guns.
Wayne had a sense of humor and liked making people laugh. He was always doing something goofy to get smiles out of the ones he was with, even up until the very end when he was in so much pain. He was a kind, grumpy, loving, always willing to help, hard-working, softy who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Rest assured he is now cancer/pain-free, resting in the arms of our Lord, in His beautiful paradise.
Wayne leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Karen Werner of Schaller, IA; children Stephannie (Aaron) Werner-Culbert of Springfield, MO, Trenton (Diana) Werner of Early, IA, and Clayton (Ying) Werner of Sulphur Springs, IA; grandchildren Logan and Kyra Gibbins, Allen Brenner, Daynia and Tristan Werner, and grandpups Archie and Onyx; sister Jeane (Garry) Capers of San Angelo, TX; brother Deane (Karen) Werner of Holstein, IA; brothers-in-law Keith (Kathy) Mentzer of Early, IA, Daniel Mentzer of Coralville, IA, and Matthew (Kae) Mentzer of Eldridge, IA; sisters-in-law Becky Werner of Kingsley, IA, and Judy Mentzer of Iowa Falls, IA; many other extended family members and friends.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Eugene and Wilma Werner; parents-in-law Howard and Betty Mentzer; brother Walt Werner; and brother-in-law Wayne Mentzer.
