Marlene Sigmon, age 84 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, surrounded by her family at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Doris Marlene Shaw was born on February 26, 1938, the only child to parents Earl and Maude (Minglin) Shaw in Sac City, where she was raised and attended school. Marlene graduated with the class of 1956 from Sac City High School.
On June 7, 1959, Marlene married Arlo “Sig” Sigmon at the United Methodist Church in Sac City. This union was blessed with two sons, Mark and Matthew. They raised their family on the Shaw family farm just west of Sac City. Marlene served as auction clerk for Farmer’s Hay and Straw Auction Co. of which she and Sig owned and operated for about 20 years and then clerked for auctions Sig and his partners had for another 40 years. The two of them never formally retired and were still traveling to auctions in their ‘Auction RV’ up until 2019.
Marlene’s faith was incredibly strong, it rarely, if ever, wavered. She was very active in her church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and was a devout member of the United Methodist Women group. Marlene spent countless hours every year preparing for the Sac County Fair behind the scenes in the office. She and Sig enjoyed the fair and were always willing to offer their services in order to help make it a successful annual event. They were both members of the Sac County Saddle Club that held Fun Days several times per year.
Marlene was a very practical and thrifty person. She was always very organized and had a very sharp mind, especially when it came to working with numbers. She loved antiquing and was quite knowledgeable in that area. It could be said that she had a stubborn side but could be persuaded...SOMEtimes. Marlene was a hard worker who never blinked an eye at helping out on the farm. She raised chickens for many years as well as livestock which they would many times butcher and process on their own. When her eyesight allowed, she enjoyed sewing. She also enjoyed attending Thursday night card club with a large group of her lady friends for many years, as well as meeting up with her Friday morning coffee crew over the years. She often mentioned a fun trip she took to visit her aunt in Pennsylvania as it was her first time flying. She and Sig took many trips to Amish Country in Wisconsin as well as to many other Amish communities, which was something they thoroughly enjoyed.
Above all else, Marlene loved her family and spending time with them. She and Sig always had Christmas Eve dinner at their house and she always made sure there was chicken noodle soup, oyster stew, and LOTS of goodies from the church cookie walk. They would then attend candlelight service. Every year she looked forward to visits from the grands and great-grands on Trick-or-Treat night and whenever she could she attended their special events such as music/band concerts, sports, etc. She was so very proud of each and every one of them. Everything about Marlene will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her son, Mark (Dianna) Sigmon of Sac City; grandchildren: Melissa (Gregg) Thomsen of Sac City, Michelle Auen of Sac City, Shawn (Summer) Sigmon of Sierra Vista, AZ, Justin (Stephanie) Sigmon of Laurens, Sarah (Taylor) Thompson of Sac City, Cody Moulton of Gaza, Mollie Sigmon of Wall Lake, Jadon Horton and Kellie Sigmon of Sac City; great-grandchildren: Kortni and Dylan Thomsen, Cooper, Carson and Malia Auen, Storm, Raven and Davey Sigmon, Piper and Marina Thompson; sisters-in-law Arlene (Bob) Foster and Ardith Sigmon all of West Des Moines, and Eleanor Sigmon of Auburn; many other extended family members and friends.
Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo; son Matthew; parents Earl and Maude Shaw; parent-in-law JC and Adelia Sigmon; and brother-in-law Arlin Sigmon.
