Margaret “Maggie” McCartan, age 76 of Pomeroy, IA, formerly of Fonda, IA, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, IA.
Margaret Jane McCartan was born on August 10, 1946, to parents Francis and Mary (Nolan) McCartan in Fort Dodge, IA. She grew up in Fonda, IA, where she attended school. She graduated in 1964 from OLGC Catholic School in Fonda. Maggie went on to further her education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls where she obtained a degree in English.
Maggie was employed by the City of Des Moines as their Director of Urban Development until retiring in 2001. She then moved back to Fonda where she taught as a substitute teacher for the Newell-Fonda School District.
She loved to read, watch movies, and enjoyed all types of music. She had a heart for history, fine arts, and watching NBA games. Maggie always enjoyed a good game of cards and liked playing board games with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling and visited Europe several times. She also made it a point to visit each of the Civil War battlefields across the nation. Maggie was a true renaissance woman, loving so much about life, the world around her and its history. She was a dear soul who will be missed immensely by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include sisters Kathleen “Kay” McCartan of Austin, TX, and Jeanne (Larry) Calkins of Benicia, CA; sister-in-law Peggy McCartan of Lee’s Summit, MO; nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family members and friends.
Maggie was preceded in death by her parents; brother Michael McCartan; and sister Mary Ann McCartan.
