She was married on December 22, 1957, to Jack Irwin at the First Christian Church in Sac City.  Jack died in a tractor accident on August 11, 1985.  They were married 27 years.

In 1979, she began work at Loring Hospital as Assistant Dietary Manager.  She returned to Iowa State and graduated with a degree in Dietetics in 1989.  She continued to work at Loring Hospital as a registered dietitian until her retirement in 2006.

She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Sac City, baptized on April 9, 1944.  She served as organist of the church from 1961 to 2018.  She was active in Eastern Star, PEO and Fortnightly Club having held offices in the organizations. She was a 50-year member of OES.

Her survivors include her three sons: Steve and Marieta of Sac City, Scott and Yande of Minneapolis, MN, and Charles and Gretta of Boone, IA. There are eight grandchildren: Ashley (Dan) Ungs, Emalee (Carter) Irwin-Roeske, and Caitlin (Jesse) Klaes, Ryan Irwin, Rachel (Jason) Stuber, Cory (Josie) Irwin, Taylor Irwin & Jordon Irwin.  Joyce's second home was the church. She and her family spent many hours there. Potluck dinners, prayer group, Winter Festivals, God’s Portion sales, youth group, church meetings, and practicing her music.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks for a donation to her “second home”. “Joyce was such an inspiration to me, her love of family showed in everything she did. I am especially grateful for a brief but important conversation with her a few weeks ago, we both knew it would be our last. My heart is heavy but I celebrate her life and her long awaited reunion with Jack. Being part of her family was such a privilege and I will miss her immensely.”

“Steve and family - we are thinking of you as you honor your mom and treasure many memories. Our sincere sympathies to you. Joyce was truly a remarkable person who put others first, was always so pleasant to visit with and shared her music ministry for decades. We understand a bit about the void that is created when our moms are missing from our lives. Peace. ”

“70 years ago I met Joyce as she played for our high school chorus here in Sac City. That's how I'll remember her-sitting on that organ or piano bench at church. And she was so dedicated to that job. She was such a sweet lady & will be missed by all who knew her. ”

“There aren't enough words to describe the loss of Joyce from our church family. My memories only go back 36 years; Harold has memories of Joyce from his entire life. We are so sad for your families, for our church, for us. We will miss her so very much. And yet, we celebrate with her that she is reunited at last with Jack and other loved ones in heaven, and that she is free of the health issues that kept her from fully enjoying all the things she loved to do these last years. Praying for a flood of sweet memories to make you smile through the tears. Much love to you all!”
