“Mary was a wonderful friend and traveling companion of Beverly (Bonebrake) Broido, my mother. She spoke fondly of their adventures together around the world when they were young and restless. And also of their time in San Francisco and Palo Alto together. When I was young we would visit the Bay Area and see Mary. I remember visiting once during a profound drought in the 70s and we weren't allowed to flush the toilet...that sure made an impression on a 10 year old me! Mary would occasionally visit us in La Jolla, and was on my Christmas Card list for many years. I am so glad she was able to return to Iowa with her experiences and travel adventures behind her, and to be close to family as her years came to an end. ”

“Sorry for your loss. Lost contact with Mary years ago but remember her well. Played lots of bridge in the smoker at BC.”

“My mom and her bridge partner, Rachel Huser, loved their games with the formidable team of Mary and Jean. And I loved to serve the coffee to that group of amazingly wise and fun and caring ladies. Fond memories. Rest well, Mary.”

“Oh I could fill a book of all the GREAT growing years the Ottos had --neighbors of the Montags. My mom said right after they moved in there was a knock on the back door and there was Mary asking-- "Do you have any girls?" And so those wonderful years Mary and I were together ALL the time---from back yard games, to garage attic club house , to sand pile play in Montags yard. It was a HUGE sandbox--the length of the garage and probably 8 ft wide. Every spring a new load of sand came and dumped. Before it was spread out we would climb up on the garage roof and jump in it UNTIl ED would say "NO MORE!!" And on and on and on the memories come back. Mary and I were 2 yr apart but not that was not a factor. As we got older beyond elementary we made a new group but as we said "kept each other close!' I shall miss her---did not see her that much anymore but sure will remember the good times and those magical years ! RIP , Mary!!! Polly Otto Renk”

“Mary was my Aunt and some of my best memories are of her reliving a trip to Peru, visiting her in California, and doing her list of chores at her Storm Lake house with my Dad (Philip Montag)”
