Don Fertig, age 85 of Polk City, IA formerly of Sac City, IA, passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021, at his home in Polk City. Donald Eugene Fertig was born on July 11, 1936, to parents James and Lillian (Barthman) Fertig in Sac City.
On January 6, 1962, Don was united in marriage to Rebecca in Jackson, MN. This union was blessed with five children: Jared, Ginger, Jeneil, Julie, and Jaree. Don had a 40 acres farm where he raised many animals: cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, roadrunners, and many guinea hens. He also had crops of corn, soybean, and alfalfa. Don taught his family how to do it right the first time, work hard, shoot guns and drive cars. Don built silos, worked at Hygrade, and was self-employed. He also remodeled rental houses in Sac City and spent time in his shed where he would fabricate, change transmissions, and do bodywork on cars. He was also a volunteer fireman for Sac City for several years. In 2012, Don and Rebecca moved to Polk City.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Rebecca Fertig of Polk City, IA; children: Jared Fertig of Fort Dodge, IA, Ginger Altmayer of Ankeny, IA, Jeneil (Tony) Sferrazza of Sioux Falls, SD, and Julie (Courtney) Ross of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren: Andy, Derek, Alicia, Kristina, Cody, Nicole, Sam, Justin, Charrise, and Jenna; great-grandchildren: Chloe, Riley, Marilyn, Jayden, Tegen, Heath, Lola, Mayson, Chaos, Alexandra, and Tessa; brother Michael Fertig; sister Pam (Steve) Roach; several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends.
Don was preceded in death by his daughter Jaree Fertig, parents, sisters Barb, Margie, and Shirley, and brother Jim.
