Verlyn Jarvis, age 85 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Verlyn Eugene Jarvis was born on November 17, 1935, to parents William and Nellie (Masteller) Jarvis in Sac City. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Christian Church in Sac City. Verlyn attended country school through the third grade and then went to Sac City Community School. He graduated from Sac City High School in 1954.
On November 17, 1956, Verlyn married the love of his life, Sandra Faye Scheffler, at the First Christian Church in Sac City. This union was blessed with three children: Daniel, Myrna, and Julie. Verlyn and Sandy raised their family in Sac City where Verlyn farmed for many years. Along with farming, he worked for Trojan Seed Company. He later worked for Noble Manufacturing, IBP, and helped at Marjo’s Greenhouse. Verlyn and Sandy also ran their own yard keeping business mowing, raking, and shoveling snow for customers. He retired in 2002.
When Verlyn wasn’t working, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bird watching. Filling his bird feeders kept him busy in his later years as he always enjoyed watching the birds come and go. Pulling the lever at the casino could easily bring a smile to his face, especially if everything matched up just right….he loved playing the slots.
Verlyn and Sandy always had small dogs as pets that were very special to them. Whether they were walking the dog together or were out for a ride around town, the dog would always be with them. Going out for coffee together at The Villager and Food Pride was part of their daily routine. The two of them enjoyed getting together with area residents and friends to keep connected.
Verlyn loved his family and was very proud of all of them. He especially enjoyed getting to see and spend time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Daniel Jarvis of Sac City, IA, Myrna (Michael) Lumsden of Roanoke, VA, and Julie (Phillip) Howes of Sac City, IA; grandchildren: Zebadiah (Thuy) Howes of West Des Moines, IA, and Michael (Julie) Howes of Indianola, IA; great-grandchildren: Kaeyleigh and Kaiden Howes of Indianola, IA; adopted grandchild Christopher Lumsden of Sac City, IA; sister-in-law Marge Jarvis of Sac City, IA; brothers-in-law Fred (Mary) Scheffler of Sac City, IA, Eugene (Diane) Scheffler of Manson, IA, and Donald (Florence) Scheffler of Boise, ID; sisters-in-law Frances (Marv) Schettler of Storm Lake, IA, and Shirley Bales of Ida Grove, IA; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and friends.
