Jerry Reiling, age 72 of Lake View, IA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, IA.
Jerome David Reiling was born on April 22, 1949, to parents Albert and Gwendolyn (Kruchten) Reiling in Manning, IA. He grew up in Lake View on the family farm along with his ten siblings. Jerry attended school at Christ The King in Breda, IA, before transferring to Lake View-Auburn High School his senior year. He graduated with the class of 1967.
On March 1, 1980, Jerry married Barbara Bogue in Lake View, IA. Combined, Jerry and Barb had four children: Tammy, Brian, Shell, and Travis. They raised their family in Lake View where Jerry had his own business, Jerry Reiling Equipment Sales for over 41 years. In 1980, they moved to the farm in rural Lake View where Jerry lived as a child where he also raised cattle.
Jerry was a simple man who loved his family above all else. He was always there to help anyone who needed it. He was patient; in fact, so patient that he was usually the go-to when it came to the kids having to talk to either mom or dad. You know how the saying goes “happy people hum”….well, Jerry hummed all of the time. He was a genuinely happy man. He was always the first to rise and, yes, typically had a smile on his face as mornings were his favorite part of the day.
Jerry was what his family and friends would call a “homegrown engineer." He was most certainly a perfectionist but was able to remain patient throughout whatever it was he was making/doing. He enjoyed woodworking and made many beautiful pieces over the years.
Horses were always a big part of Jerry’s life. He learned how to ride on a steer named "Patcheye" as a kid. He was a member of the Lake Riders Saddle Club for many years. He also enjoyed watching old westerns, fishing, and camping. His father, Al, bought a 1955 school bus that he turned into a camper. Jerry eventually acquired the bus and gave it an overhaul. Many long trips were taken with the family in the bus. It went from Iowa to California. So many wonderful memories were made in that bus, and now Jerry’s son, Travis, owns the bus. It is still used for camping to this day.
While his “Dear” for life was and always will be Barb, Jerry or "Gramps" was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. Spending time with them meant the world to him. His genuine kind heart and patient ways will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
