Ron Meyer, age 86 of Lytton, IA, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, May 9, 2021, at his home in Lytton.
Ronald Robert Meyer was born on December 9, 1934, to parents Elmon and Elva (Darling) Meyer in Williams Township in Calhoun County, IA. He was baptized on December 30, 1934, and later confirmed on March 21, 1948, all at Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton where he was a life-long member.
Ron grew up on a farm in Lytton along with his two sisters, Carole and Marlene. He attended Nemaha School through the third grade and then attended Lytton Community School where he graduated from on May 16, 1952.
In January 1954, Ron volunteered for the United States Army where he served overseas with the 36th ENGR, GP(C) in Korea. He was honorably discharged in December 1955 after which he attended Iowa State University.
On May 17, 1959, Ron married Marlene Marie Albers at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City, IA. This union was blessed with three children: Joan, Alan, and Nancy. Together they raised their family on a farm north of Lytton where they would remain living for over 57 years. In May 2020, Ron and Marlene moved off the farm and into town. Of course, Ron continued to farm after moving into town because does a farmer ever really retire?
Ron enjoyed so much that life had to offer him here on earth. He was very giving of his time by serving others, his church, and his community. He served as Legion Commander, was a Lions Club member, was the Williams Township Clerk, served on the Lytton Community School Board, was on the Calhoun County Extension Council, served on the Rural Electric Co-op board (REC), and served as a trustee and deacon at church.
Ron was an active person and enjoyed participating in many outdoor activities throughout his life. He was a bowler, golfer, loved baseball and playing fastpitch softball, and in his downtime could be found working on crossword and Sudoku puzzles.
While all of the above kept him busy, the best time spent in his eyes was that spent with his family. He was a proud dad for sure, a super proud grandpa, and most recently…an extremely proud great-grandpa. Knowing great-grandson Kacen’s first word was “tractor” brought him so much joy.
Ron and his family took many trips up north to Long Lake, MN, where they all enjoyed fishing together, another one of Ron’s favorite things to do outdoors. This particular destination became the family’s annual vacation of sorts. Many great memories were made not only in Minnesota but also more recently on their trips to Alaska, Estes Park, CO, and Yellowstone and Glacier National Park just to name a few. Ron and Marlene celebrated their 50th Anniversary in Branson, MO, alongside their family. Many great times were had and so many wonderful memories made. Ron will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Marlene Meyer of Lytton, IA; children: Joan Meyer (Reg Waggoner) of Fort Dodge, IA, Alan (Carol) Meyer of Lytton, IA, and Nancy (Phil) Fullerton of Lawson, MO; grandchildren Nicole Meyer of Lytton, IA, and Jamie (Cory) Waller of Lohrville, IA; great-grandson Kacen Meyer Waller; sisters Carole Darling of Owatonna, MN, and Marlene Farrell of Des Moines, IA; brothers-in-law Warren (Betty) Albers of Sac City, IA, and Ed (Ann) Albers of Sac City, IA; sister-in-law Doris Berry of Sac City, IA; many other extended family members and friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Elmon and Elva Meyer; parents-in-law Oliver and Dorothy Albers; brothers-in-law: Don Darling, Chuck Farrell, and Gene Berry.
