Arlene Tebben, age 91 of Wall Lake, IA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.
Arlene Mae Gossman was born February 1, 1930, to parents Leo and Julia (Kaipust) Gossman on a farm near Platte Center, NE, where she, along with her five siblings, attended country school. Later, the family moved to a farm near Thompson, IA, where Arlene attended high school. She graduated from Thompson High School with the class of 1948. After graduation, Arlene worked as a telephone operator before attending St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA, where she earned her Registered Nurse degree.
On December 27, 1958, Arlene married Richard Tebben at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Corwith, IA. This union was blessed with two children, Anita and Daniel. Together they raised their family in Corwith, Osage, Ventura, Storm Lake, Sac City, Lake View and finally Carnarvon, IA.
Arlene worked many years as an RN, beginning in the office of Dr. John Camp in Britt, IA, then the Newell Good Samaritan Society in Newell, IA, Park View Manor in Sac City, IA, and Shady Oaks Nursing Home in Lake City, IA. She had a strong work ethic and was known for her high standards of care. After Arlene retired from nursing, she became a waitress at Van’s Café in Auburn, IA, and thoroughly enjoyed her years there as she made many friends among the “regulars.” Arlene also volunteered her time in the elementary school helping Begindergarten children, and at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake, serving their afternoon coffee. Her ambitious Farm Festival raffle ticket sales revealed a strong sense of community pride and responsibility.
Arlene’s faithfulness, sharp wit, and fresh rhubarb pies will all be sorely missed.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Anita (Dennis) Nuetzman of Mason City, IA; daughter-in-law Stephanie Clemens of Bondurant, IA; grandchildren: David (Suzy) Nuetzman, Adelaide Nuetzman, and Erin Nuetzman; step-grandchildren: Shannon (Tim) Sievers, Elizabeth Aschinger, and Aliss (Ty) Thompson; four great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Mike Tebben; sister-in-law Norma Tebben; nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Tebben, son Daniel Tebben, Richard’s brothers Russel, Robert, Larry, and Lenny; her only brother: Duane (Lila) Gossman and four sisters: Ivona (Herb) Mahlendorf, Marjorie (Longin) Sousek, Evelyn (Vince) Eisenbacher, and Phyllis (Lee) Griffin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family to establish a scholarship fund for nursing students.
