Gerhard “Ozzie” Ausborn, age 98 of Sac City, IA, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 29, 2021, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City. Gerhard “Ozzie” Max Ausborn was born on June 14, 1922, to parents Max and Charlotte (Huschke) Ausborn in Potsdam, Germany. He moved to the United States when he was nine months old and attended elementary school Lytton and then high school in Sac City, IA. Ozzie graduated from Sac City High School with the class of 1940.
After graduation, Ozzie enlisted into the United States Army Air Corps where he served during World War II with the 309th Fighter Squadron. He earned the ranking of Staff Sergeant and received many special honors including eight campaign and battle star medals. Ozzie was honorably discharged in May of 1945.
On June 11, 1945, Ozzie married the love of his life, Marie Wiegand, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rockwell City, IA. This union was blessed with seven children: Dale, Donna, LuAnn, Darrell, Mary Lou, Kris, and Robert. He and Marie raised their family in Lake City where he farmed until he was 40 years old. He later worked for the State of Iowa’s Department of Revenue as a tax auditor.
Ozzie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, IA. He served as treasurer of the local Holy Name Society, was an active member of VFW Post 590, as well as the American Legion. Ozzie had many hobbies and things he enjoyed doing in his spare time including ballroom dancing, square dancing, attending kids’ athletic events, and annual reunions with his military unit, the 309th Squadron. He was privileged to go on the Honor Flight in 2009.
Ozzie and Marie had a genuine love of dancing and were quite good at it. Imagine the two of them doing the Jitterbug on the dancefloor back in the 50’s and 60’s, what great partners they made. The two of them also enjoyed traveling the world and were quite fond of their many trips to Germany. They were blessed to share 74 wonderful years together.
“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone Lord, make me dwell in safety” Psalms 4:8. May he rest in peace.
