“My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Owens' family. She was my sixth grade teacher in the chicken hatchery when the new elementary school building was being built in Sac. She always had a great sense of humor and put up with a lot of shenanigans that year! In the spring, she brought in an incubator and we raised baby chicks! She had a large impact on my life and was one of inspirations of me becoming an educator myself! May she rest in peace. ”

“Darlene was my first cousin and our families enjoyed many good times growing up. In 1971 when we moved to Sac City she was Dave and Barbs teacher as they went through sixth grade. I loved her quick wit and was always fun to be around.”

“I have so many great memories of Darlene. She was my 6th grade teacher and I had to start school that year on crutches. She couldn't have been better. She also taught my dad at the country school. Later in life she came to my parent's 50th wedding anniversary party as well as coming to both their funerals. I'll never forget her kindness .”

“Mrs. Owens was my sixth grade teacher. I still remember how she would read chapter books to us during recess if we couldn't go outside. We would always beg her to read another chapter when recess was over. She usually did. When I started reading chapter books to my boys, I often thought of her. Small acts of kindness can have a huge impact on students. A great lady. But don't mess with her, by the way. Class of 1980 RULES.”

“Darlene was my roommate when I began teaching business classes in Sac City in 1991 and we roomed together until I married my husband Dave. We remained good friends over the years and we would get together for lunch with other friends from the Sac City School System when I visited Iowa. She was a great friend always!

“My sympathy to Darlene's family ~ she was a dedicated member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teacher's sorority, for many, many years. I will miss her kind, down-to-earth conversations about teaching and other worldly issues.”
