Ben Busch, age 90 of Sac City, IA passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at his home in Sac City. Ben H. Busch was born to Benjamin and Norma (Johnson) Busch on January 2, 1929 in Duluth, MN. He was welcomed home by his brother Richard. Three years later, they welcomed their sister Pat. Ben’s early childhood was spent in Duluth, roaming the area. He loved to watch the big ore trains, ice skate and ski. In the summer, he would spend his time with grandparents, Nels and Lisa Johnson on their farm in Aitkin. He also spent time with his Aunt Frank, who was a depot agent.
Ben quit school in his junior year and sailed the great lakes as a coal passer and deck hand. On his 17th birthday, he joined the United States Marine Corps. His first duty station was northern China, where he rode Mongolian ponies and walked on the Great Wall of China. He served in Korea and was part of the Inchon Landing and the Chosin Reservoir Operations. He also served in Vietnam and various other countries. Ben was assigned 1st Tanks and also had tours on the drill field. He retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant from the USMC in 1976, with thirty years of service. He then worked as a police officer and juvenile monitor tracker for the court.
Ben is survived by his wife Sherry, who spent 35 wonderful years with him and by his brother Richard. He is the father of Kathleen (Mike) Blauvelt, Joyce (Dan) Schaldach, Kim (Darlo) Rahn and Bret (Amy) Wessendorf. Grandfather to Ron, Eric, Natalie, Adam, Matthew, Josh, Paul and Adam. Great grandfather to 17 and great-great grandfather to one.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Patricia and his beloved dogs.
He was much loved and will be sorely missed by his family.
