Lenore “Betty” (Young) Custer was born in Lake View, IA on October 28, 1934, to Leonard (Dale) and Abbie (Peters) Young.  She was baptized and confirmed at Wheatland Presbyterian Church, rural Breda. She attended school in Lake View and graduated in 1953.  She loved playing basketball, scoring a personal best 31 points in one game, as well as participating in music, band, and theater.  She briefly attended the University of Iowa.

She married Robert J. Custer on December 5th, 1959, in Newton, IA.  During her adult life, she and Robert lived in Des Moines, Crystal MN, Ridgewood NJ, Dayton and Cleveland OH, and St. Clair/East China MI where she held various positions in banks, credit unions, and retail.  She maintained connections with family and friends despite the distance by sending greeting cards for holidays, birthdays, etc. and faithfully visited her home state, many times attending the Lake View Alumni Banquets. After Robert’s death in May 2015, she returned to Storm Lake, IA, where she was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church; she enjoyed her time singing in the choir with new friends.

Betty passed away March 23, 2019, at B.V. Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

She is survived by her sister, Norma (John) Irwin; her niece, Kim (Mike) Wilson; and nephew, Jay (Pennie) Irwin; their children, Mallory (Brandon) Anderson, Whitney (Adam) Brierly, Samantha Irwin, Trevor (Kaitlin) Irwin and their little ones, Payton and Lillian Brierly, and Easton Anderson.

“I am so sadden to learn of Betty's passing, I didn't receive any response from my last couple letters to her and just found her obituary today. She was such a wonderful woman always sending me coupons and different things she would find that she thought I would like. When Bob passed it was heart breaking to watch her try and go on with her life those two were such a great couple and always so nice. I worked with Betty during her years at Marysville (Michigan) Meijer in the bakery and every once in awhile the group of us would get together for lunch and reminisce or more likely update each other on where I lives had taken us. Betty was always there with an encouraging smile or a bit of advice. She is going to be greatly missed. She very often talked about her niece and her sister who she dearly missed and even walked me through the decorations they had at her last high school reunion.”
